Monday 11-2p, Wednesdays 2-5 pm, Fridays 3-8pm
Responsible for maintaining safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. Responds to emergency situations in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. This position will also assist with swim instruction when needed.

Essential Functions:

  • Maintains constant observation of the pool area.
  • Ensures safety by communicating and enforcing any pool rules, policies, and guidelines at participants’ comprehension level.
  • Ensures safety by checking for hazardous conditions and making sure all safety equipment is properly placed and in proper working condition.
  • May be required to perform the duties of Swim Instructor.
  • Responds to emergency situations in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures for any situation, including first aid or CPR, work-related employee injuries, etc. Completes incident and accident reports as required.
  • Follows all aquatics employee rules, dress code, policies, and guidelines.
  • Maintains and records accurate records including pool chemical readings, first aid kit supplies, and pool equipment.
  • Maintains a clean environment by following and recording proper cleaning procedures.
  • Inspects pool and rescue equipment for safety hazards, damage, or wear.
  • Sets up and stores equipment and assists other employees with event set up.
  • Practices rescue and fitness drills regularly.
  • Promotes aquatics and other YMCA programs.
  • Communicates any suggestions to improve the aquatics facility.
  • Physically performs all skills required of a lifeguard.
  • Hears noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Remains alert with no lapses of consciousness.
  • Sees and observes all sections of an assigned zone of responsibility, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Currently hold or possess the ability to participate in and achieve certification for the following: Professional rescuer, First Aid, and Lifeguard certification from the American Red Cross or YMCA, Starguard, Ellis that can be crossed over to American Red Cross.
  • Minimum of six months or more of related lifesaving experience preferred.

Free Certification Training Provided by the YMCA
Certification requirements include CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, and must hold current Lifeguard certification through the YMCA or American Red Cross.
Passing the physical competency test includes: Complete a swim-tread-swim sequence without stopping to rest by jumping into deep water and totally submerge, resurface then swim 150 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. (Swimming on the back or side is not permitted. Swim goggles are allowed.) Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs. Swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds by starting in the water, swimming 20 yards. (The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.) Surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to a depth of 7 - 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping the face out at or near the surface. Places 10 lbs. object on the deck and exits the water without using a ladder or steps
