Summary

Under the supervision of the Chief of Business Applications or a senior team member, assists with the support, maintenance, and development of the County’s portfolio of Microsoft Structured Query Language (SQL) Server databases. Participates in maintaining real estate Computer-Assisted Mass Appraisal (CAMA) and document management systems, supports data integrations using SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), helps generate SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) reports and entry-level single-page, interactive canvas used to monitor business metrics at a glance (Power BI dashboards), and assists with scripting tasks in Transact-SQL (T-SQL), C-Sharp (C#), the cross-platform task automation framework and scripting language (PowerShell), or similar programming languages. Works closely with team members, end users, and vendors to translate business needs into reliable and secure database solutions. Responsible for SQL and other database backups.

Incumbent may be expected to assist with after-hours database support under guidance of senior staff.

Work is characterized by developing SQL Server proficiency and a willingness to learn and apply best practices in database administration.

Supports implementation of roles, permissions, encryption, and retention controls mandated by Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), and County policy under the direction of senior staff.

Learns and contributes to database architecture, data integration, and performance troubleshooting in a team environment.

Job responsibilities may include any of the following, depending on the incumbent’s functional assignment. This is not meant to be an exhaustive list of job functions, but a representative sample of the type and level of work that is expected in this position.

Assist in the development, testing, and implementation of database solutions in support of County business applications.

Help create and maintain basic SSIS packages and supporting scripts to enable data transfers between systems.

Support the administration of real estate CAMA and document management systems; escalate advanced issues to vendors or senior staff.

Develop and maintain standard SSRS reports and contribute to foundational Power BI dashboards; perform basic data analysis.

Participate in requirements gathering and testing processes; help document test cases and outcomes.

Apply basic security and retention policies using predefined scripts and procedures; support recovery testing as assigned.

Assist in coordinating and documenting release deployments; communicate updates to stakeholders with oversight.

Help maintain diagrams, data dictionaries, and documentation knowledge base or shared repositories; participate in knowledge sharing with IT team members.

Assist with coordination of all database system development, integration, and maintenance.

Adds new data and manipulate existing data in multiple work files; apply standards, procedures, commands and data dictionary terminology.

Examples of duties

Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Systems, or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience demonstrating foundational database knowledge and the ability to learn and grow in a professional IT environment. Internship, coursework, or 1–2 years of experience in database administration, development, or support preferred.

Requires an acceptable criminal background investigation, including an acceptable applicant fingerprint check required by the FBI’s Criminal Justice Information Services Security Policy.

Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.

This job is contingent upon successful completion of pre-employment checks to include criminal history, background and DMV record checks.

Qualifications

Fundamental knowledge of T-SQL and SQL Server query development.

Basic understanding of SSIS or other ETL tools and concepts.

Basic experience with SSRS; introductory exposure to Power BI is a plus.

Familiarity with development environments such as Visual Studio and scripting or programming languages including C#, PowerShell, VBA, or Python.

Familiarity with line-of-business applications or eagerness to learn domain-specific systems like real estate or document management.

Ability to troubleshoot system and end-user issues efficiently and effectively.

Ability to follow a methodical process for reviewing, testing, and implementing technology solutions.

Ability to communicate technical concepts effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Preferred: Familiarity with source control systems (e.g., Git) and introductory knowledge of cloud-based database platforms and services.

Supplemental information

Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and peripheral equipment. Must be able to lift and move components weighing up to 55 pounds as needed. Physical demand requirements are for those of Moderately Active Work.
