Agency Summary
The mission of the Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD) is to provide emergency and fire protection services to the City of Indianapolis and surrounding areas. IFD personnel are highly trained professionals, serving not only as firefighters but also as paramedics, emergency medical technicians, extrication specialists, swift water and rescue divers, confined space and trench rescue technicians, and hazardous materials specialists. This broad skill set enables the department to save lives, protect property, and preserve the environment. IFD achieves this mission by fostering a productive, collaborative, and compliant work environment that enables its workforce to effectively serve the residents of Indianapolis and Marion County.

The Planning Data Scientist’s primary purpose is to analyze incident, demographic, socio-economic, enterprise, and internal program data to discern baseline performance levels, establish benchmarks, and identify performance gaps. IFD is committed to a data-driven, continuous improvement approach that relies on the proper collection and analysis of several disparate data sources. A formally trained data scientist will allow the department to optimize resource placement (stations and apparatus), thoroughly analyze current performance levels, and project future needs and service demand to inform hiring and program development (operations and community risk reduction).
