Position Responsibilities:

The Data Scientist reports directly to a Data Science Manager, situated in the Office of the Secretary, focused on projects directed by the Secretary, Deputy Secretaries, and Chief of Staff, to support policy decisions that affect the Department.

The primary responsibilities of this position include supporting the data science team, collaborating with divisions and external agencies, analyzing data and business processes, and developing automation solutions to improve efficiency and decision-making within the Department. Specific duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Collect, clean, and prepare data from multiple sources to ensure accuracy, consistency, and usability for analysis and reporting.
  • Apply statistical and analytical methods to interpret datasets and identify trends, patterns, anomalies, and insights, including support for predictive analytics initiatives.
  • Develop and maintain dashboards, reports, and data visualizations using business intelligence tools such as Tableau and Power BI.
  • Design, develop, and implement process automation solutions to streamline reporting and operational tasks.
  • Translate complex data findings into clear, actionable insights for non-technical stakeholders and leadership, pay attention to detail.
  • Document data processes, methodologies, and analysis steps to ensure transparency, reproducibility, and knowledge sharing.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to gather requirements and support project planning for analysis and automation initiatives.
  • Provide ongoing support, maintenance, and enhancements for automation and reporting systems across the agency.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Extensive knowledge of data analytics methodologies and business intelligence tools.nowledge of data cleansing, data analysis, evaluation and data modeling; use mathematical and statistical skills to help gather, measure, organize, and analyze data.
  • Knowledge of business processes and ability to translate stakeholder requirements into analytical solutions
  • Knowledge of automation (robotic and analytic) and application of automation tools.
  • Knowledge of statistics & statistical modeling.
  • Ability to develop dashboards, reports, and data visualizations using BI tools.
  • Ability to work effectively independently and in a group.
  • Ability to collaborate with others and deliver quality work under tight timelines and shifting priorities.
  • Proven ability to work ethically and with integrity.
  • Willingness to learn and take on new responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in computer science, data science, mathematics, statistics, business analytics, or a related field. A postsecondary degree may be used as an alternative for years of experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • Experience in data cleansing, data wrangling, and data merging.
  • Experience with visualization tools such as PowerBI and Tableau.
  • Working knowledge of database systems and querying languages (e.g., SQL) to extract and manipulate data efficiently.
  • Experience with Statistical analytical methods for data analysis.
  • Working knowledge of creating scripts (Python, R, SAS) to build machine learning models.
