Expected Compensation: The starting salary range for this position is expected to be between $69,056 and $90,000; however, compensation will be determined based on experience.

The insights & analytics team strives to make Penguin Random House Canada the most data-driven book publisher in the industry, connecting our authors and books to as many readers as possible. We take advantage of a mature data warehouse, state-of-the-art cloud infrastructure, and reliable IT partners to deploy and maintain machine learning models that speak directly to our business needs. We use a modern tech stack to accelerate our work as much as possible without sacrificing quality.
Reporting to the Director of Data Science, you will work closely with the entire insights & analytics team to deliver impactful analysis, build predictive models, and develop self-serve tools that empower employees in all areas of our business to make informed decisions.
What you’ll do:
Design, build, test, and deploy machine learning models that generate practical recommendations and support business decision-making for key stakeholders.
Monitor production tools, models, and pipelines; identify performance issues; and recommend improvements to increase reliability, accuracy, and impact.
Analyze large and varied datasets to identify trends, patterns, risks, and opportunities that inform model development and business strategy.
Communicate findings, recommendations, and technical concepts clearly and persuasively to audiences with different levels of data fluency.
Build dashboards, reports, and self-serve tools that make insights accessible, actionable, and easy to use across the business.
Work closely with colleagues across Penguin Random House Canada and other territories to share ideas, align on best practices, and develop scalable solutions.
Experience and knowledge you’ll bring (qualifications):
Required:
Undergraduate or graduate degree in a quantitative discipline such as Statistics, Economics, Engineering, or Computer Science; or equivalent experience.
Strong probability and statistics fundamentals, including the abilities to think probabilistically, quantify uncertainty, and identify sources of bias in datasets.
Theoretical and practical knowledge about machine learning algorithms, including the ability to choose an appropriate model for a given problem, prevent overfitting, and identify potential failure points.
Demonstrated proficiency using Python and/or R for data analysis and data science.
Demonstrated proficiency using SQL to interrogate large and complex data sets.
Demonstrated ability to identify and deliver analytical and/or data science products that meet stakeholder needs.
Ability to clean and synthesize data sources of varying quality.
Strong communication and information design skills.
Experience using Git for version control.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and collaborative digital tools including Teams and similar platforms.
Strong organization and time management skills that allow you to prioritize your objectives and meet all deadlines.
A proactive mindset coupled with an ability to work both independently and as part of a larger team.
An inclusive approach, supported by cultural competency and a proven ability to collaborate with people from across a wide range of diverse backgrounds.
A genuine enthusiasm for books and reading, with a strong interest in the publishing industry and connecting people to stories, authors, and ideas.
Preferred:
2+ years of professional experience in machine learning or applied data science.
Advanced degree (M.Sc., Ph.D.), or equivalent practical experience, in a quantitative discipline.
Experience using cloud platforms for machine learning development.
Experience with containerization and container orchestration.
Experience using AI coding agents (e.g. Claude Code) to facilitate development work where appropriate.
Knowledge of the Linux command line and shell scripting.
This role is expected to work at least three days per week from our office located at 320 Front Street West, Toronto, ON. Therefore, candidates should reside within the commuting distance of our office.
