Job Description

Introduction

As an intern, you are part of the Robust Design / Reliability Department. This internship is intended to reduce the effort required for data extraction and summarization, while enabling engineers to make faster and more informed reliability-critical decisions. This assignment aims to develop an agent-based retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) framework for enterprise knowledge access, capable of operating across multiple SQL tables, relational data structures, and a knowledge graph. Through dynamic agent-based decision-making, the system can identify the most relevant source, determine the optimal retrieval sequence, and combine structured and graph-based context to generate grounded, explainable, and context-aware responses.

Your assignment

During this internship, you will explore advanced retrieval and reasoning techniques for enterprise knowledge systems. You will investigate how intelligent agents can retrieve information from multiple structured data sources and knowledge graphs while improving answer quality and reducing hallucinations. The outcome of this assignment will support the development of scalable and robust AI solutions for industrial use. Your main responsibilities will be:

  • Investigate retrieval and reasoning methods across multiple relational data sources and knowledge graphs
  • Evaluate different approaches for intelligent source selection and retrieval planning
  • Measure retrieval efficiency, answer quality, and hallucination reduction using defined evaluation methods
  • Design, develop, and improve a scalable agent-based retrieval-augmented generation architecture
  • Validate the robustness and industrial applicability of proposed solutions
  • Document findings, experiments, and implementation details in a reproducible manner
  • Deliver a well-structured code repository and supporting technical documentation

This is a final-year bachelor or master internship for a minimum of 5 months, minimum 4 days per week (3 days on-site). The start date of this internship is as of February 2026, although an earlier start date is possible.

Your profile

To be suitable for the internship, you

  • Are pursuing a bachelor's (final year) or master’s degree in computer science, artificial intelligence, data science, software engineering, or a related field
  • Have experience with Python and SQL programming
  • Have knowledge of machine learning, large language models, information retrieval, or knowledge-based systems
  • Are analytical and able to translate research questions into practical solutions
  • Are proactive and comfortable working independently while collaborating with stakeholders
  • Have experience with software development and scientific experimentation

As an intern, you will gain hands-on experience at the intersection of AI research and industrial application. You will work in a collaborative environment where innovation, learning, and continuous improvement are encouraged.

About ASML

Who are we?

ASML is an innovation leader in the global semiconductor industry. We make machines that chipmakers use to mass produce microchips. Founded in 1984 in the Netherlands with just a handful of employees, we’ve now grown to over 40,000 employees, 143 nationalities and more than 60 locations around the world.

What do we do?

We provide chipmakers with hardware, software and services to mass produce patterns on silicon through lithography. Our lithography systems use ultraviolet light to create billions of tiny structures on silicon that together make up a microchip. We push our technology to new limits to enable our customers to create smaller, faster and more powerful chips.

Who are our people?

While you may think that only engineers and mathematicians work at ASML, you'll be surprised to find out that our people come from a wide variety of backgrounds. Across ASML, we have dedicated teams that manage customer support, communications and media, IT, software development and more. Every team in the company is essential for pushing our technology and the industry forward.

If you love to tackle challenges and innovate in a collaborative, supportive and inclusive environment with all the flexibility and freedom to unleash your full potential, ASML is the place to be.
