About the Role

Abion is building its data and AI function from the ground up, and this is one of the first roles in it. As a Data Platform Engineer, you will report into the Head of Data and AI and be a senior, hands-on engineer at the heart of the build, creating the enterprise analytics and integration layer that brings data together from across Abion’s systems into a complete, trusted source for the whole business.

You’ll take work from first conversations with the business through to secure, scalable production solutions, using modern AI-assisted tools to deliver quickly without compromising on quality. We see data as the foundation for everything we want to achieve with analytics and AI, and the platform you build will underpin the insights, applications and AI services used across the business.

Key Responsibilities

We’re building a modern, cloud-based data platform on open standards, with the flexibility to adopt the best tools as the market evolves. That means Lakehouse platforms, event-driven and real-time integration, knowledge graph technologies and AI-assisted engineering, giving Abion near real-time insight and a complete, trusted view of the business.

• Build Abion’s enterprise data platform, establishing a scalable, trusted foundation for analytics, integration and AI.
• Integrate data from a wide range of business systems and external sources using modern techniques such as APIs, change data capture, event streaming and mirroring, enabling near real-time reporting.
• Build a complete, trusted knowledge layer, connecting data with business definitions and context so that people, applications and AI can use it with confidence.
• Develop robust ETL/ELT pipelines and model data into tested, reusable datasets, working with business owners to define and certify the data and KPIs that matter most.
• Deliver trusted, self-service reporting and make data available to applications and AI tools across the business.
• Put governance in place from the start: access control, sensitive data classification, lineage, data quality and observability.
• Monitor platform performance and cost, keeping both under control as use of data services grows.
• Use AI-assisted development tools to accelerate delivery while maintaining high engineering standards.
• Work directly with teams across the business and Technology, and champion data, AI and modern ways of working.

Must haves

• Significant experience building and running a modern data platform on Microsoft Fabric, Databricks, Snowflake or similar, using a medallion architecture, including managing ingestion performance and forecasting platform costs.
• Strong Python/PySpark and SQL, with a track record of production ETL/ELT pipelines integrating data from varied business systems, including less well-documented sources.
• Experience delivering self-service data and reporting through tools such as Power BI or custom solutions, with governance (access control, classification, lineage and data quality) implemented in practice.
• Hands-on experience with an enterprise-wide data catalogue in active use for cross-system governance, ownership models and access management.
• Experience working with unstructured data and building on top of it, for example through knowledge graphs or ontologies.
• Experience building secure, scalable solutions on Azure or an equivalent cloud platform.
• Regular use of AI-assisted development tools, such as Claude Code or Cursor, with the judgement to review and validate AI-generated output.
• The knowledge to architect solutions that use AI and apply best practice when building with it, including security, data privacy, testing and cost control.
• Proven end-to-end delivery, from concept to production, in a small, high-impact team, using CI/CD and DevOps best practices and working in an agile, iterative way.

Nice to have

• Experience delivering enterprise AI solutions, such as agents and workflows built on Microsoft Foundry or similar.
• Experience in IP, legal tech or compliance-adjacent industries.
• Awareness of AI and data regulations and standards, such as the EU AI Act, ISO/IEC 42001 and GDPR, and how they shape the way solutions are designed and governed.
