At CCNSW we understand that nothing feels better than doing work you really care about. As Australia’s leading organisation supporting all people impacted by all cancers, we understand how good it feels to make a difference. We know that almost 1 in 2 Australians are affected by cancer during their lifetime, by joining the passionate team at CCNSW you’ll know that each day the work you’re doing will positively impact people in your life and Australia.

About the teamAbout the role:

The Daffodil Centre is a strategic initiative of the Cancer Council NSW (CCNSW) and the University of Sydney, underpinned by a formal affiliation and collaboration agreement. As a world-leading population and health services cancer research centre, it provides key evidence to influence policy decisions and real-world improvements along the cancer continuum. The Centre combines the complementary strengths of CCNSW and the University of Sydney to create a centre of national and international research excellence where research contributes to a cancer free future.

The Data Manager plays a critical role in supporting The Daffodil Centre’s expanding precision cancer prevention and molecular research programs by developing and managing the systems that collect, integrate, store, and govern complex research data. Working across epidemiological, clinical, registry, laboratory, and genomic datasets, the role establishes a unified, analysis-ready data environment that enables high-quality research and evidence generation. Reporting to the Head of Research Translation, the position collaborates closely with bioinformatics, laboratory, ethics, and research teams to ensure effective data management, governance, and operational integration while supporting the establishment of a new PC2-certified molecular research laboratory.

About the benefits:

  • Generous salary packaging options that can increase your take home pay by paying certain expenses using pre-tax dollars up to $15,900 a year.
  • Recognised for Voice Project's 2021 and 2023 "Best Workplace" Award as well as Xref “Best Workplace” in 2025.
  • Additional performance-based leave available.
  • Work for purpose and know that your work fosters an engaged, diverse and culturally aware organisation.
  • Discounts available for everyday expenses such as private health, retail and fitness

Key responsibilities of the role:

  • Lead the development and management of the Centre’s research data platform, integrating, harmonising, and securely storing epidemiological, clinical, registry, laboratory, and genomic data.
  • Manage major cohort, registry, and linked datasets, including data extraction, linkage, secure access, longitudinal follow-up, and integration with external data sources such as cancer and death registries.
  • Design and oversee data capture systems for clinical and epidemiological studies, ensuring data quality, consistency, completeness, and effective study setup through robust data frameworks and workflows.
  • Coordinate laboratory and molecular data integration, connecting LIMS, sequencing, and other laboratory outputs into harmonised, research-ready datasets in collaboration with bioinformatics and laboratory teams.
  • Ensure data governance, compliance, and security, including consent management, quality assurance, metadata, documentation, controlled access, privacy compliance, and audit processes.
  • Provide researcher support and enable collaboration by delivering analysis-ready datasets, advising on data management strategies, and facilitating secure national and international research partnerships.

About you:

Essential:

  • Relevant qualifications and research data expertise, with experience managing data across the full research lifecycle, including collection, harmonisation, linkage, quality assurance, documentation, and controlled data release.
  • Data platform and systems management experience, including building or maintaining data warehouses, common data models, and integrating data from multiple complex sources.
  • Technical proficiency in research data management tools, including electronic data capture systems (e.g. REDCap) and programming languages such as SQL, R, and/or Python for data transformation, linkage, and quality control.
  • Strong knowledge of data governance and compliance, including consent management, ethics, privacy legislation, de-identification, and secure access frameworks for sensitive research data.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to solve complex problems, work autonomously, produce high-quality documentation, and collaborate effectively with researchers and non-technical stakeholders.

Desirable:

  • Experience managing large-scale research data environments, including cohort studies, linked datasets, registries, longitudinal data collection, and secure research platforms.
  • Technical expertise in laboratory and molecular data systems, with experience integrating LIMS, managing genomic and sequencing datasets, and supporting complex data infrastructure requirements.
  • Strong research and data governance capability, including cancer or precision prevention research, Australian data linkage frameworks, SOP and data strategy development, and collaboration across multi-site research partnerships.
