JOB DESCRIPTION
Summary/Objective
The Data Governance Specialist is responsible for supporting the Bank’s enterprise data governance program across a multi-state community banking environment. This position helps establish, maintain, and promote policies, standards, procedures, and controls that improve the quality, consistency, security, accessibility, lineage, retention, and appropriate use of enterprise data. The role works collaboratively with business lines, technology, compliance, risk management, privacy, information security, operations, lending, deposits, and finance to define data ownership, strengthen data stewardship practices, support regulatory and policy compliance, and enable trusted data-driven decision-making across the Bank.

- Assist in the development, implementation, and maintenance of enterprise data governance policies, standards, procedures, and operating practices appropriate for a regulated community banking organization.
- Partner with data owners, data stewards, business lines, and technology teams to define data roles, responsibilities, accountability structures, data issue escalation paths, and governance decision-making processes.
- Support the identification, classification, and documentation of critical data assets used in lending, deposits, customer information, finance, risk management, regulatory reporting, compliance, and operations.
- Maintain and improve business definitions, metadata, data lineage, data dictionaries, glossaries, data quality rules, authoritative sources, and stewardship documentation for key Bank data domains.
- Monitor, assess, and report on data quality, completeness, consistency, accuracy, timeliness, and usability; coordinate remediation activities with business and technology stakeholders.
- Support compliance with applicable banking, privacy, security, records retention, and regulatory expectations by helping ensure data is appropriately protected, retained, accessed, shared, and used.
- Assist with data access reviews, data risk assessments, control testing, data sharing evaluations, regulatory examination support, audit requests, and evidence gathering related to data governance activities.
- Facilitate data governance meetings, working groups, and stakeholder discussions to resolve data issues, align standards, document decisions, and promote consistent data management practices across the Bank’s operating footprint.
- Develop and deliver communications, guidance, procedures, and training materials to improve data literacy and promote adoption of data governance practices among business and technical users.
- Track data governance metrics, key performance indicators, issues, risks, exceptions, and action items to measure program effectiveness and support continuous improvement.
- Collaborate with risk, compliance, audit, information security, privacy, and business teams to support accurate and reliable data for regulatory reporting, management reporting, customer reporting, and strategic decision-making.
- Support data governance needs related to core banking systems, loan and deposit platforms, customer information systems, reporting tools, data warehouse, third-party systems, and system conversions or integrations.

Skills/Abilities
- Exercises sound judgment in applying data governance principles in a regulated banking environment, escalating data risks, policy exceptions, control gaps, or regulatory concerns as appropriate while balancing business needs with data quality, privacy, security, compliance, and customer confidentiality requirements.
- Understands data management concepts such as metadata, data lineage, master data, reference data, data quality, data catalogs, access controls, reporting, and data lifecycle management. Familiarity with banking data domains, including customer, account, loan, deposit, transaction, regulatory reporting, risk, finance, and operational data, is strongly preferred.
- Takes ownership of assigned governance activities, follows through on action items, maintains accurate documentation, and supports decisions with evidence, standards, and stakeholder input.
- Communicates complex data governance concepts clearly to technical and non-technical audiences; prepares clear documentation, meeting summaries, recommendations, and status updates.
- Builds productive partnerships with business lines, technology teams, compliance, legal, privacy, information security, internal audit, risk management, operations, lending, deposits, finance, and analytics teams to advance shared data governance objectives across the Bank.
Supervisory Responsibility
This position does not have direct supervisory responsibilities; however, it may provide guidance, coordination, and support to data stewards, project teams, business stakeholders, and cross-functional working groups involved in data governance activities.
Work Environment
This job operates in an office setting, the opportunity to telework is not available. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. Office environment with job duties conducted via telephone, face to face meetings, and on the computer.
Physical Demands
This position requires manual dexterity, the ability to lift files and open cabinets. This position requires bending, stooping, or standing, as necessary.
Travel
Limited local travel may be required for this position.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in information systems, data management, computer science, business administration, analytics, information security, or a related field required; equivalent combination of education, certification, and relevant experience may be considered.
- Three or more years of experience in data governance, data management, data quality, or information security.
- Experience in a financial institution or highly regulated industry is strongly preferred.
- Experience with banking systems, data governance frameworks, metadata management, data catalogs, data quality tools, reporting platforms, SQL, regulatory reporting, privacy requirements, or audit/examination support is beneficial.
For Applicants located in Alexandria, Virginia (VA): The anticipated salary range for this position is $85,000–$110,000 annually.
For Applicants from all other locations: The salary will be based on experience, qualifications, and geographic location.
The ranges listed for Viriginia represent the good-faith compensation the Company reasonably expects to pay for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be determined based on factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's skills, qualifications, experience, education, certifications, internal equity, and business needs. This position may also be eligible for additional compensation, such as bonuses or incentive pay, where applicable.
