Your New Role and Responsibilities
As a Data Engineering Team Lead, you will provide senior technical leadership and people management within a high-performing data and geospatial delivery environment responsible for the production, sustainment, and continuous improvement of enterprise geospatial datasets and data engineering pipelines supporting mission-critical outcomes.
Operating within secure and regulated environments, you will take accountability for the operational performance, quality, and reliability of data engineering and GIS production services delivered by your team. You will combine practitioner-level technical depth with line management responsibility to ensure delivered solutions are robust, well-governed, and aligned with customer, contractual, and regulatory requirements.
In this role, geospatial and spatiotemporal data will be a primary application domain. While you are not expected to be the primary hands-on implementer, strong transferable data engineering expertise is essential to enable informed technical decision-making, effective assurance, and credible leadership across complex dataflow and production contexts.
Key responsibilities include:
Provide day-to-day line management, leadership, and professional development for Data Engineers and GIS Production Engineers
Foster a high-performing, collaborative team culture focused on quality, accountability, and continuous improvement
Oversee workload planning, prioritisation, and delivery outcomes, ensuring timeliness, compliance, and effective risk management
Provide senior technical leadership across geospatial data engineering and GIS production workflows, including ingestion, transformation, validation, and delivery
Review and assure technical outputs, act as escalation point for complex issues, and ensure alignment with engineering, ITIL, and data governance standards
Drive continuous improvement, capability uplift, and operational maturity through mentoring, standards development, and stakeholder engagement
What You’ll Bring to Make An Impact
Demonstrated experience as a senior practitioner in data engineering, geospatial data engineering, or a related discipline
Proven experience in line management or technical leadership of engineering teams
Strong knowledge of enterprise data engineering practices within production environments
Experience providing technical review, guidance, and assurance of engineering outputs
Ability to operate under broad direction with accountability for team-level outcomes and decision-making
Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills, including translating technical concepts for varied audiences
Commitment to quality, continuous improvement, and operational excellence within secure or regulated environments
Don’t worry if you don’t tick all the boxes – if you meet most of them, we encourage you to submit your application. We’re most interested in your strengths, what you want to learn and how far you want to go.
This role does requires the successful applicant to be an Australian Citizen and hold an active TSPV Clearance, accompanied by the ability to be successful for a DISA.
