Job Description

Build Australia's Next Generation Health Data Platform

Design the data that helps deliver better healthcare to millions of Australians.

  • Build technology that improves lives – Design and optimise enterprise-scale data platforms that directly support patient care, operational performance and nationally significant digital health initiatives.

  • Work at the forefront of AI and modern data engineering - Build cloud-native data pipelines powering advanced analytics, Machine Learning and Generative AI solutions using Azure, Microsoft Fabric and Databricks.

  • Shape the future of healthcare data – Influence enterprise architecture, governance and engineering standards across one of Australia's largest not-for-profit health systems.

What if your next engineering challenge could genuinely improve healthcare?

Most Data Engineering roles focus on moving data from A to B.

This one helps transform how healthcare is delivered across Australia.

At St Vincent's Health Australia, we're building intelligent, secure and scalable data platforms that empower clinicians, operational leaders and researchers to make better decisions, faster. Every pipeline you build, every platform you optimise and every improvement you deliver contributes to better patient care and a stronger health system.

You'll join a collaborative Digital & Technology team driving enterprise-wide data capability across one of Australia's largest healthcare organisations. Working with Azure, Microsoft Fabric, Databricks and modern engineering practices, you'll help build scalable platforms that support advanced analytics, AI, automation and the next generation of digital healthcare.

If you're looking for a role where technical excellence meets meaningful purpose, we'd love to hear from you.

About the Program – Medicare Mental Health Check-In

This role supports one of Australia's most innovative digital health initiatives.

The Medicare Mental Health Check-In is a national virtual mental health service delivered in partnership with the Australian Government, providing accessible, evidence-based mental healthcare to people across Australia.

Data is fundamental to the success of this service.

As our Data Engineer, you'll help design and build the secure, scalable data platforms that enable real-time reporting, operational insights, advanced analytics and future AI capabilities that support clinicians and improve patient outcomes.

About St Vincent’s Health Australia

For more than 165 years, St Vincent's Health Australia has been providing compassionate care to Australians.

Founded by the Sisters of Charity in 1857, we have grown into one of Australia's largest not-for-profit health and aged care providers.

Today, more than 30,000 employees deliver care across public hospitals, private hospitals, aged care, home care, virtual care, research and community services throughout New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland.

Our vision is simple but ambitious—to deliver excellent and compassionate care within a better and fairer health and aged care system.

Digital transformation is central to achieving that vision, and data is at the heart of everything we do.

The Opportunity

This is far more than a traditional Data Engineering role.

You'll become a key contributor to the design, development and evolution of our enterprise data platform, enabling trusted data across operational reporting, predictive analytics, AI and enterprise decision-making.

Working closely with architects, analysts, clinicians, product teams and business stakeholders, you'll engineer modern cloud-based data solutions that are scalable, secure and built for the future.

You'll have the opportunity to influence engineering standards, contribute to enterprise architecture decisions and help shape the future of data across St Vincent's Health Australia.

This is a 12-month full-time fixed-term opportunity, based in our Melbourne Group Office with hybrid working arrangements.

What You'll Be Doing

You'll have the opportunity to:

  • Design, build and optimise enterprise-scale ETL and ELT pipelines
  • Develop modern cloud-native data solutions using Azure Data Factory, Microsoft Fabric and Databricks
  • Design and maintain scalable data warehouse and lakehouse environments
  • Apply software engineering best practices including CI/CD, automated testing, version control and Infrastructure as Code
  • Develop high-performing data models that support enterprise analytics and reporting
  • Build trusted data foundations that enable Machine Learning, advanced analytics and Generative AI initiatives
  • Develop vector database pipelines supporting Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) solutions
  • Ensure data governance, security, quality and compliance within a healthcare environment
  • Collaborate with data scientists, analysts, architects and business stakeholders to deliver high-value solutions
  • Monitor, troubleshoot and continuously improve platform reliability, scalability and performance
  • Contribute to documentation, engineering standards and the ongoing uplift of enterprise data capability

About You

You're an experienced Data Engineer who enjoys solving complex technical challenges while delivering meaningful business outcomes.

You combine strong engineering capability with curiosity, collaboration and a passion for continuous improvement.

You're comfortable working across both technical and non-technical teams and enjoy building elegant, scalable solutions that make a real difference.
