The CMC Project Management team is responsible for leading the design and execution of integrated CMC strategies from portfolio entry through global submissions and approvals.

The PAI is a newly established, strategic team dedicated to leveraging data analytics to transform CMC project management. This team will transform CMC portfolio data into a strategic asset for decision-making—tracking PRD portfolio metrics, driving PM tool development, and setting data standards. As a key enabler for data-driven decision making, this team has significant opportunities to create substantial impact by providing actionable insights, optimizing portfolio performance, and supporting strategic initiatives across our CMC operations. Join us at this pivotal moment and play a key role in shaping the future of CMC project management.

Position Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Data Engineer to join our CMC Portfolio Analytics & Insights Team. This role will be crucial in designing, building, and maintaining robust and scalable data pipelines and infrastructure to support our cutting-edge research, development, and business operations. The successful candidate will play a key role in transforming raw data into actionable insights, contributing directly to our mission of making life better.

Responsibilities

Data Engineering & Pipeline Architecture

  • Design, build, and maintain the data pipeline architecture behind the unified CMC Operational Data Hub
  • Apply strong data modeling practices — datamart design, semantic modeling, and clean integration into Power BI
  • Use Microsoft Fabric's unified analytics ecosystem (Data Factory, Synapse Data Engineering, Data Warehouse, Real-Time Analytics) to deliver scalable, production-grade solutions
  • Automate extraction, transformation, and loading across diverse source systems, replacing manual reconciliation with reliable, repeatable pipelines
  • Drive continuous improvement in data delivery and infrastructure as the team and data volumes scale

Analytics & Visualization

  • Build high-impact, interactive Power BI dashboards and reports that set the standard for portfolio analytics across CMC
  • Implement and maintain row-level security and tiered access models so the right audiences see the right data
  • Write advanced SQL to support in-depth analysis, reporting, and ad hoc portfolio questions
  • Translate technical work into clear, business-friendly language that builds trust and drives adoption across CMC PM

AI-Enabled Acceleration

  • Use AI/LLM tools (e.g., Copilot, Claude) and emerging AI-enabled data platforms to speed up data integration, pipeline development, and standardization — always on validated, governed data
  • Partner with the team's AI Expert as that role comes online, ensuring AI capabilities are built on a trustworthy data foundation

Basic Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Data Science, Engineering, or Medical related field
  • 3+ years of experience in data engineering or data analytics, with a track record of delivering solutions that were actually adopted
  • Expert-level proficiency in Power BI: dashboard design, development, and administration
  • Strong experience with automation tooling — Python, Microsoft Fabric, or comparable platforms — for data prep and workflow automation
  • Advanced SQL skills for complex data manipulation and analysis
  • Experience with Smartsheet
  • Working knowledge of the pharmaceutical/biopharmaceutical industry, with a basic understanding of CMC (Chemistry, Manufacturing, and Controls) concepts
  • Familiarity with Lilly's internal data ecosystem, or demonstrated ability to ramp up quickly on complex enterprise data environments
  • Demonstrated use of AI/LLM tools to accelerate data engineering workflows, automate documentation, or enhance analytics development
  • Genuine curiosity about data and analytics, with a drive for continuous learning
  • Qualified applicants must be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. Lilly will not provide support for or sponsor work authorization or visas for this role, including but not limited to F-1 CPT, F-1 OPT, F-1 STEM OPT, J-1, H-1B, TN, O-1, E-3, H-1B1, or L-1.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in data engineering or data analytics,
  • Experience designing scalable pipelines on OneLake, implementing medallion (Bronze/Silver/Gold) architectures, and orchestrating workflows with Notebooks, Spark, and SQL
  • Experience implementing enterprise-grade security, compliance, and governance frameworks within Microsoft Fabric
  • Experience deploying, maintaining, and governing models in production environments
  • Ability to translate technical concepts into clear, business-friendly language and build cross-team collaboration
  • Experience integrating Smartsheet with enterprise data platforms — building automated extraction/transformation pipelines and real-time dashboards that combine project management and business analytics
  • Familiarity with agile methodologies and project management practices
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to lead and influence across diverse teams
