The Data Engineer will design, build, and operate the data pipelines and platforms that power Frontier's healthcare data ecosystem. Own the full data lifecycle — from ingesting raw source data across EHR and EDI systems to delivering governed, reliable data marts that serve clinical analytics and operational decision-making. This role works within a regulated environment where data integrity, security, and compliance are foundational requirements, not optional considerations — HIPAA and SOC 2 Type II obligations are embedded into the day-to-day engineering work.

What You'll Own

• Pipeline Development: Design and maintain Apache Airflow DAGs to orchestrate ELT pipelines at scale across healthcare data sources including EHR feeds and EDI transactions
• Transformation Layer: Build and maintain dbt models that transform raw data into well-documented, tested, and business-ready data mart layers ready for consumption by business analytics users.
• Data Governance: Implement and enforce data quality checks, lineage documentation, and data contracts; contribute to cataloging and stewardship practices that satisfy HIPAA and SOC 2 Type II requirements
• Healthcare Data Integration: Ingest and normalize data from FHIR APIs, HL7 feeds, and EDI 837/835 sources; ensure PHI is handled, masked, and audited in compliance with applicable regulations
• Platform Stewardship: Contribute to data infrastructure — dataset management, data-mart patterns, IAM policies, and pipeline observability.
• Collaboration: Partner with analytics, clinical, and product teams to define data models and deliver data products that support reporting and operational workflows

Requirements

• Minimum 3 years of experience in a data engineering role
• Proficiency in Python for pipeline development
• Hands-on experience authoring and maintaining Apache Airflow DAGs
• Experience building transformation layers with dbt (models, tests, documentation)
• Strong SQL skills with experience in a cloud data warehouse
• Working knowledge of HIPAA requirements as they apply to data pipelines — PHI classification, encryption at rest and in transit, access control, and audit logging
• Familiarity with ELT patterns and modern data stack principles

Preferred Qualifications

• Deep experience with healthcare data standards (HL7, FHIR, EDI 837/835)
• Google Cloud Platform exposure (Cloud Composer, BigQuery, Cloud Storage, Pub/Sub)
• Familiarity with SOC 2 Type II control requirements and how data systems contribute to audit evidence
• Experience with data cataloging or observability tooling (e.g., Dataplex, Monte Carlo, Atlan)
• Terraform or infrastructure-as-code experience for data platform provisioning
