Job Description

The successful candidate will perform hands-on operation and maintenance of the electrical and mechanical infrastructure for AWS-owned Data Centers (DC) in Amazon Web Services (AWS) Cloud regions.

Our engineers are directly operating and maintaining AWS DCs' world-class mechanical and electrical infrastructure. In addition to technical operations and maintenance, the successful candidate will perform facility operations and ensure the implementation of safety procedures.

This is a highly hands-on, field-based role requiring a motivated, self-managed individual who demonstrates initiative and proactively seeks solutions to problems while striving for operational excellence.

The work follows a process-oriented approach: the individual needs a strong willingness to learn new processes and adapt to rapidly changing operational scenarios with conflicting priorities.

The successful candidate will be part of the Engineering and Facilities team and will be responsible for maintaining availability for customers, ensuring maintenance and operation of technical infrastructure, and the upkeep and operation of the DC facility.

Key job responsibilities
SAFETY
Follow and maintain the highest safety standards and diligently encourage a world-class safety culture. As a facility owner team member, ensure remediation of safety risks/issues in conjunction with other teams. Own safety initiatives and projects to foster strong safety culture.
Lead by example in implementing and maintaining AWS safety protocols
Respond to emergency situations and coordinate with emergency services as needed

ENGINEERING & FACILITY OPERATIONS AND MAINTENANCE
• Hands-on operation and maintenance of electrical and mechanical equipment, including Uninterruptable Power Supplies (UPS's), Switchgear, Circuit Breakers, Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS's), Diesel Generators, Chillers, Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning (HVAC), Exhaust Fans, Variable Frequency Drives (VFD's), and Transformers
• Operate, monitor, and maintain fire detection and suppression systems including pre-action systems, VESDA (Very Early Smoke Detection Apparatus), and other fire protection equipment
• Perform routine inspections and testing of fire alarm panels, smoke detectors, and suppression systems in accordance with AWS standards and local regulations
• Troubleshoot events within internal Service Level Agreements (SLA's)
• Take daily operational readings of all mechanical and electrical equipment through routine rounds/log-taking (temperatures, voltages, currents, etc.)
• Perform hands-on preventive and corrective maintenance activities on critical infrastructure
• Execute equipment repairs, replacements, and facility modifications in accordance with AWS standards
• Directly perform routine maintenance tasks including filter changes, equipment cleaning, lubrication, and minor repairs
• Maintain accurate documentation of all maintenance activities, equipment performance, and system configurations
• Collaborate with internal AWS teams on capacity planning and infrastructure improvements
• Coordinate and oversee contractor work when specialized services are required
• Respond to alarms and perform emergency troubleshooting and repairs
• Manual handling and lifting of equipment may be required (weight limits in accordance with health & safety regulations)

Basic Qualifications


- Professional or formal Electrical Certification or Apprentice/trades certified or diploma in an Electrical field
- Demonstrate key electrical competencies (Practice & Theory) & knowledge of mechanical systems (Mechanical, HVAC systems, Controls)
- Knowledge of fire detection and suppression systems
- Valid driving license (required for shift-based schedule)

Preferred Qualifications

- Data Center/mission critical engineering experience in AWS-owned facilities
- Hands-on experience with fire protection systems including pre-action, VESDA, and gaseous suppression systems
- Experience performing direct maintenance and repairs on critical infrastructure equipment
- Familiarity with AWS operational procedures and standards
- Experience working in shift-based operations environments
- Willing to travel between data center sites, and internationally if required
