Other requirements: You will have completed a minimum of 2 years of your undergraduate degree but will not have graduated at the start of your placement. You must be enrolled at a UK (United Kingdom) or ROI (Republic of Ireland) University for the duration of your placement.

If you have already graduated with a bachelor’s degree and are currently studying a postgraduate Masters, you are not eligible for this programme.

Duration: 1 year (approximately)

Salary: A salary of £26,400 plus a bonus.

Role 1 - Smart Manufacturing Analytics – Montrose

Degree requirements: Manufacturing Engineers, Electrical Eng, Digital/Computer Science, Automation

Workplace Arrangements: Full time onsite

Overview of the Department

The Manufacturing Science & Technology (MSAT) department supports pharmaceutical manufacturing operations by providing technical expertise, process monitoring, and performance analysis to ensure processes operate efficiently, consistently, and compliantly. The team is responsible for understanding and optimizing manufacturing processes, equipment performance, and process control strategies to maintain high standards of product quality and operational excellence.

MSAT works closely with manufacturing, engineering, quality, and technical teams to evaluate new and modified equipment, map and improve processes, and drive continuous improvement initiatives. The department also plays a key role in investigating process deviations, conducting root cause analysis, assessing risks, and implementing solutions that enhance efficiency, throughput, and reliability. Through data-driven decision making and cross-functional collaboration, MSAT helps deliver sustainable improvements across the manufacturing environment.

Key Placement Learnings

• Developed an understanding of pharmaceutical manufacturing processes, equipment operation, and process control principles.
• Gained experience in process monitoring, performance analysis, and the use of data to support operational decision-making.
• Enhanced knowledge of process mapping techniques and the evaluation of new or modified equipment and technologies.
• Built practical experience in continuous improvement activities, focusing on efficiency, quality, and throughput optimization.
• Strengthened problem-solving, risk assessment, and root cause analysis skills through participation in deviation investigations.
• Improved collaboration and communication skills by working with cross-functional teams across manufacturing, engineering, quality, and technical functions.

Role 2 - Digital, Data & Analytics – Worthing

Degree requirements – Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, Data Analytics

Workplace Arrangements: Full time onsite

Overview of the Department

This role sits in the GSK Production System (GPS) and Strategy team. This department includes Continuous Improvement, Digital Data Analytics, and Project Management teams which oversees the whole Worthing site and provide support to all departments from end to end. The candidate will have the opportunity to get involved in all site functions and experience a wide range of processes but also will have the ability to learn transferable skills such as Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma tools, Digital, Data and Analytics, etc.

Key Placement Learnings

• Support with business analytics to support the drive of KPIs
• Support the engagement of Digital, Data & Analytics culture across site
• Drive/support improvement frameworks in key areas across the site
• Support the role out of GSK Production system (Continuous Improvement system) across all of the site
• Work closely with production areas to support the execution of their improvement plans
• Learn and develop digital solutions as part of SMART Manufacturing using AI, Power BI, Power Apps, and Machine Learning

Role 3 – Scientific Data Engineering - Stevenage

Degree requirements: Mathematics, Data Science, Computer Science, Computational Biology, Computational Chemistry, OR in Life Sciences/Chemistry with a strong computational component

Placement Overview

The Data Automation and Predictive Sciences (DAPS) in R&D drives the realization of GSK’s data-as-an-asset and predictive modelling ambitions by leveraging proprietary data, advanced computational capabilities, and deep scientific expertise. Comprising discovery-focused data and computational scientists, the team delivers measurable impact on the progression of the medicine portfolio by improving cycle times and probability of success through seamless data generation, capture, and reuse, including predictive models and decision-support frameworks. By simplifying decision-making, clarifying accountability, and establishing standards with stakeholders, the team ensures the effective use of data to enhance portfolio speed, quality, and overall value.

Key Placement Learnings

• Experience working with APIs, data pipelines, and integration patterns that enable systems to communicate reliably and securely.
• Understanding of good practices for data governance, reproducibility, documentation, and operational support in regulated R&D environments.
• Collaboration within a multidisciplinary team, gaining insight into how data science enables faster, higher‑quality scientific decision‑making.
• Ownership of a personal project or well‑defined work packages contributing directly to a real‑world R&D initiative, such as predictive modelling for target identification, compound profiling, or translational biomarker discovery.

Role 4 – Informatics & Data Science – Ware

Degree requirements – Data Science, Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, Chemistry, Pharmaceutical/Biological Sciences, or another highly numerate subject

Workplace arrangements – Full-time onsite

Overview of the Department

This placement sits within the Ware Informatics and Data Science team, which uses scientific, manufacturing and process-performance data to develop insights and innovative data solutions. The student will work with teams across the site, gaining hands-on experience of data science in a regulated pharmaceutical manufacturing environment while supporting better decision-making, process improvement and the introduction of new products.

Key Placement Learnings

• Develop automated data processes, datasets, dashboards and visualisations
• Apply tools such as Python, R, SAS, Power BI and Microsoft Power Platform
• Analyse product and process data to identify trends and support root-cause analysis
• Translate business and scientific requirements into practical data solutions
• Work collaboratively with manufacturing, quality, technical and digital teams
• Develop an understanding of data integrity, GMP, validation, Agile working and continuous improvement
• Support the deployment of sustainable data solutions that contribute to GSK’s zero-waste and zero-defect ambitions
