Our Technology team has 6 different departments: Information Security, Service Delivery, Business Enabling Systems, eCommerce & Marketing Technology, Data and Stores, Services & Supply Chain.

Whether it’s online or in our stores, the work that the IT team does is instrumental in PetSmart’s success. We have a strategic and actionable plan underway and are looking for associates who are just as excited about it as we are.

How this role will make an impact:

At PetSmart, data is the driving force behind our strategic decisions and process improvements, providing the insights that add real value to our business.

As an Analytics Data Engineer, you will play a key role in designing, building, and maintaining our data analytics products, services, and architectures. Your work will ensure that our data products and systems are accurate, available, and performant. You will collaborate closely with business units, analysts, and other stakeholders to support and enhance our analytical capabilities.

In this role, you will focus on creating sustainable reporting, analytics, and data solutions that align with business needs, drive value, and achieve desired outcomes. You will develop and implement these solutions using our enterprise technologies and architecture, which include MicroStrategy, Databricks, Snowflake, TIBCO, and GCP.

Your goals and responsibilities will include:

  • Documentation & Requirements Gathering: Develop and maintain clear documentation for data models, analytics products, and processes. Work with business leaders to understand needs, formulate requirements, and recommend data solutions, ensuring thorough documentation and communication.
  • Data Visualization: Develop and enhance dashboards and reports by preparing and optimizing data for visualization tools.
  • Data Analysis & SQL Querying: Collaborate with data analysts, data architects, and business stakeholders to understand their data needs. Write and optimize SQL queries to retrieve and analyze data from various databases, providing necessary datasets, reports, and queries for analysis.
  • Performance Optimization: Enhance data processing and query performance to efficiently manage large volumes of data.
  • Data Quality Management: Implement and oversee data quality checks to ensure accuracy and consistency. Identify, analyze, and resolve data quality issues, monitor data flows, and work with teams to maintain data integrity.
  • Testing & Validation: Conduct thorough testing of analytics data products and systems, including unit tests, integration tests, and user acceptance testing (UAT). Coordinate with QA engineers for comprehensive test coverage and timely issue resolution.
  • Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement: Engage with cross-functional teams, including developers, architects, and analysts, to meet business and technical requirements. Partner with product owners/business stakeholders to align solutions with business objectives.
  • Operational Support & Maintenance: Provide ongoing support for data solutions by monitoring system performance, addressing issues, and coordinating with operations teams to ensure supportability.
  • Continuous Improvement: Contribute to the enhancement of data delivery processes by identifying opportunities for increased efficiency, scalability, and automation.

Must-Have Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Computer Engineering, MIS, or a related technical discipline.
  • BI Experience: 5+ years of hands-on experience with BI tools, preferably MicroStrategy, or similar tools such as Tableau, Power BI, or ThoughtSpot.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in writing SQL queries, scripting, and performing data verification.
  • Tool Experience: Familiarity with tools like Databricks, Snowflake, and SQL Server. Experience with similar toolsets is acceptable.
  • Knowledge: Strong understanding of business intelligence, data warehousing, data modeling, and related architectures and terminology.
  • Relationship Management: Proven ability to build successful relationships with both external and internal partners.
  • Communication: Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Problem-Solving: Demonstrated skills in problem-solving, multitasking, and troubleshooting, with a high degree of flexibility.
  • SDLC/Agile Experience: Experience with Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) and Agile development methodologies to plan and organize team activities.
  • Analytical Skills: Strong analytical abilities with a keen understanding of key business processes and related issues.
  • Self-Leadership: Ability to work independently and in team setting, manage conflict, and demonstrate strong self-leadership.
  • Learning Agility: Quick to adapt and learn new data technologies as they evolve.

Nice to Have:

  • Experience with Python scripting, Informatica, SnowSQL scripting, and TIDAL.
  • Experience with release management and production support.
  • Familiarity with cloud-based data solutions and data governance best practices.
