The Data Analyst is an entry-level position responsible for supporting the analysis and reporting of data to assist state agencies in making informed decisions. This role involves collecting, processing, and analyzing data, preparing reports, and performing basic data quality checks. The Data Analyst will work under the supervision of senior data analysts or data scientists and gain hands-on experience with data analysis tools and techniques.

Primary Responsibilities


Assist in the collection, cleaning, and processing of data from various state agencies and external sources.
Perform data entry, data validation, and basic statistical analysis to ensure data accuracy and completeness.
Create basic data visualizations and reports to help state agencies interpret and understand their data.
Support senior analysts in conducting more complex data analysis and creating predictive models.
Help maintain and update databases and data management systems to ensure accurate and up-to-date information.
Assist in generating ad-hoc reports and queries based on agency needs.
Participate in quality assurance processes, identifying and resolving data inconsistencies and discrepancies.
Help with data documentation and record-keeping to support data governance standards.
Collaborate with other teams and departments to ensure data requirements are met.

Knowledge and Skills


Basic knowledge of data analysis techniques and statistical methods.
Familiarity with programming languages such as SQL, Python, or R.
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel or similar spreadsheet software.
Good understanding of data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI).
Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
Ability to work with large datasets and conduct basic data analysis tasks.
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to explain data findings clearly.

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree in data science, statistics, computer science, information technology, or a related field preferred. At least two years of experience in data science, machine learning, or advanced data analysis.

Satisfaction of the minimum qualifications, including years of experience and service, does not entitle employees to automatic progression within the job series. Promotion to the next classification level is at the discretion of the department and the Office of Personnel Management, taking into consideration the employee’s demonstrated skills, competencies, performance, workload responsibilities, and organizational needs.
