Job Description

COLUMBIA Integrated Power Systems (IPS) Engineering has an opening for an engineer to support the design, test, and system and shipboard integration of the COLUMBIA Class Main Propulsion Control System (MPC). This role provides the opportunity to oversee the development and integration of critical components into the revolutionary electric propulsion system for the COLUMBIA Class. The D489 MPC team responsibilities include MPC design development/redesign efforts, qualification testing, and analysis for all systems within the component including digital signal processors (DSPs), general purpose processors, control systems, etc. Additionally, the team has a strong focus on driving the supplier schedule including oversight of design documentation, test procedures, and test reports to meet all applicable requirements while identifying deficiencies in the specification to apply lessons learned to future electric propulsion plant submarine topologies. Engineers in the group will assist in MPC construction support, shipboard integration, and test support at Electric Boat manufacturing facilities, including the IPS Compatibility Test Facility (CTF) in Philadelphia, PA and the Groton Shipyard.

Responsibilities: The engineer hired for this position will be expected to:

  • Coordinate and oversee MPC supplier design and redesign efforts (software and hardware)
  • Verify control system design compliance with specifications and system requirements
  • Troubleshoot test data/findings for MPCs at the IPS CTF and supplier facility
  • Implement short-term and long-term solutions to software bugs
  • Interface with subject matter experts (SMEs) and senior technical personnel at Electric Boat
  • Interface with technical and management personnel at NAVSEA, NNL, NSWC, BPMI, and vendors
  • Interface with Operations and Trades at Electric Boat manufacturing and testing facilities
  • Enforce technical requirements on vendors
  • Support lifecycle management activities such as spares and obsolescence management

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • BS or MS engineering degree with technical background (Software, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechatronics, etc.)
  • 0 - 4 years of relevant post-graduate engineering experience
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance
  • Experience using Microsoft products
  • Ability to occasionally travel to remote facilities within the United States (Philadelphia, PA; Milwaukee, WI; Washington, D.C., etc.)

Preferred:

  • MS engineering degree with technical background (Software, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechatronics, etc.)
  • Experience in control systems and digital signal processing theory and development
  • Experience with motor control and power electronics
  • Multi-disciplinary systems engineering experience in complex systems-based products
  • Experience using MATLAB and/or Simulink
  • Experience working with government customers
  • Ability to understand macro level objectives and priorities while driving detailed level actions
  • Experience with MIL Standards
