About the Role
The role of the Cytotechnologistis to perform complex technical tasks involved in the preparation and screening of cytology slides for evidence of cancer or other pathologic conditions.
What You’ll Be Doing
Clerical Duties
Receive specimens and assign accession numbers to specimens received in the accession log book Gives a gross description to each specimen received.
Orders appropriate cytology requisitions and completes template in Medent computer system as required.
Files cytology slides and requisitions after the final report is signed out
Perform and record daily cytology QI indicators such as pap stain adequacy and specimen refrigerator temperature.
Specific Cytology Duties
Performs microscopic examination of cytology slides and prepares a preliminaryreport of diagnostic findings for the pathologist. The preliminary report includes:
an evaluation of specimen cellularity and adequacy
an evaluation of the presence or absence of abnormal and of the degree of abnormality associated with the abnormal cells
an evaluation of other significant microscopic findings such as the presence of blood, inflammatory cells, bacteria, fungi, parasitic organisms, casts, crystals, etc.
Any abnormal cells that are found are marked for review.
Completes computer template or separate paper report as directed by the Pathologist
Maintains a daily log of slide screening statistics
Ensures cytology laboratory compliance of QI monitors, slide and record maintenance and statistical records kept with CLIA regulatory standards.
Maintains and ensures the laboratory is CLIA compliant and oversees the daily operation of CLIA requirements for the Pathology laboratory.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Non-specific Cytology Duties
Centrifuge specimens, make slides in the cyto-centrifuge and apply fixative to slides prepared.
Prepare and dilute reagents needed for Papanicolaou staining procedure.
Stain slides following Papanicolaou stain procedure and coverslip.
Dispose of all specimens, containers, tubes and biohazardous materials used in specimen preparation. Maintain cleanliness of laboratory equipment and work area.
Perform routine maintenance on lab equipment as needed.
Perform and record QI on histology cases.
Monitor inventory of reagents and supplies used.
What We Expect from You
Education must meet CLIA standards and encompass training in an approved cytotechnology program and successful certification (ASCP or equivalent).
At least one year of experience is preferred.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Computer Skills
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have thorough knowledge in computer information systems.

$35.00-$43.00 / hour
