We’re looking for a proactive Cyclic Leading Hand to lead a small crew delivering cyclic and first response maintenance across the state highway network on the IDC contract in the Manawatū-Whanganui region, based in Palmerston North.
This is hands-on, important work. You’ll lead from the front, keep your team moving, and help make sure the network is safe for the public at all hours. The role works across a rotating roster, including day and night shifts, with emergency callouts as required. If you like variety, back yourself under pressure, and know how to keep standards high without the big ego, this could be your place.
Ngā tino kawenga mahi | Key role responsibilities
Lead and support a small team delivering cyclic and reactive maintenance work safely and efficiently.
Coordinate people, plant, tools and materials for planned works and urgent response tasks.
Assess sites quickly, manage immediate risks, and make sure the public and crew stay safe.
Complete maintenance activities such as pothole repairs, sign and EMP maintenance, barrier upkeep, detritus removal and general network response work.
Keep accurate daily records and make sure worksites are left clean, safe and ready for the next job.

A Full Class 2 licence as a minimum, plus WTR endorsement.
At least 2 years’ experience in RFS, cyclic maintenance, or similar road maintenance work.
Experience in a Leading Hand, team lead or similar role is an advantage.
The ability to read work schedules, follow compliance requirements, and stay calm when the pace lifts.
Flexibility to work rotating AM and PM shifts, up to 10–12 hours, weekends, and rostered callouts. STMS is preferred.
