Department: Surgery- Open Heart
Shift/schedule: Full Time (40hrs/wk), M-F 7a-3:30p, on-call required
GENERAL SUMMARY
Works under the supervision of the Registered Nurse. The Surgical Technician assists in patient care activities and performs Surgical Technician duties in the scrub role. Assists the circulating RN with duties as appropriate.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
• High School Diploma or successful completion of an equivalent High School Exam Required
• Graduate of a Certified Surgical Technologist program required
• Working knowledge of medical terminology required
Licensure:
• CST or TS-C required
• BLS within 90 days of hire required
Experience:
• Operating Room scrub tech experience and/or one year scrubbing in open heart or cardiovascular surgery preferred.
JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES AND PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS
The following is a summary of the major job duties of this job. Other duties may be performed, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below. Specific activities may change from time to time.
1. Scrubs on all types of CV surgical procedures.
2. Identifies patient needs/physician preferences for surgical supplies, equipment and instruments, including updating physician preference lists.
3. Organizes activities to meet the surgery schedule.
4. Performs technical skills in accordance with policies and procedures.
5. Performs “on-call” duties as required.
6. Assists with orientation of new employees and acts as preceptor for new employees.
7. Assists SPD personnel with orientation to CV instrumentation. Inspects and identifies instruments in need of repair.
8. Assists staff members in locating instruments and equipment.
9. Assists in maintaining a clean and safe environment in the OR.
10. Contributes and fosters the team approach in all unit operations using positive interaction with customers.
11. Performs tasks in other peri-operative areas as needed.
12. Respond appropriately to emergency call (off-shift) and immediate “bring-back” patients.
13. Demonstrate knowledge and be able to assist with cardiopulmonary bypass cannulae.
14. Assist with valvular repair and implantation (this includes valve preparation and sizing).
15. Assist with and “set-up” off-pump stabilizing devices.
16. Functional knowledge and assist with set-up of endoscopic video equipment (vein harvest).
17. Pre-cleans, decontaminates and transports contaminated instruments according to policy
18. Performs intermediate-level disinfection and/ or high level disinfection per the Instructions for Use (IFU) by the manufacture. This includes ensuring the scopes or probes used within the department are cleaned, disinfected, maintained and stored per the IFU’s.
