The College of Veterinary Medicine at Ohio State is hiring a Director of Facilities. The Director of Facilities is a hands-on proactive problem-solver who provides strategic and operational leadership for the planning, maintenance, renovation, and management of the college’s physical plant and equipment in support of its academic, clinical, and research missions. This role oversees the facilities of a large, complex environment with more than 500,000 square feet encompassing a tertiary veterinary hospital, ambulatory clinical facilities, classrooms, laboratories and agricultural buildings. The facilities director has strategic oversight for the lifecycle management of buildings, building systems and specialized equipment. This individual works with leadership to identify and prioritize facilities needs to develop the annual operating and capital budgets. The Director works with key stakeholders leading all facility-related projects from concept through completion, coordinating with internal stakeholders, university partners, and external vendors while ensuring compliance with safety, regulatory, and environmental standards (e.g., OSHA, ADA).

Responsibilities include developing and executing preventive maintenance and replacement strategies; managing repairs, emergency response, and risk mitigation; overseeing space planning, relocations, and construction activities; and maintaining comprehensive asset and inventory systems. The Director serves as the primary liaison for facilities-related matters, represents the college in institutional and external engagements, and ensures effective integration of infrastructure with technical and IT systems.

The position supervises an operational facilities team, including hiring, training, and performance management, and fosters a culture of safety, accountability, and operational excellence. Additional duties include oversight of building security, hazardous materials handling, equipment procurement, and specialty support for instructional, clinical and research environments.

Working Conditions

Work requires some physical effort; lifting 40-50 lbs; may operate heavy equipment, climb ladders and work with dangerous power equipment; may be exposed to animal inflicted injuries and diseases, exposure to hazardous chemicals and solutions, and animal dander; subject to 24-hour emergency call .

This is an essential role requiring availability for 24/7 emergency response and occasional work in varied conditions, including technical and industrial settings.

Additional Information:

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience), with demonstrated experience in facilities management, project management, and supervision within large, complex organizations. Experience in service functions, maintenance, operations, and supervising. Primarily works first shift but must be flexible to work additional hours/shifts and is subject to 24-hour emergency calls. Strong leadership, budgeting, and compliance expertise required; Requires successful completion of a background check.

Desired Qualifications

General knowledge of hospital, laboratory and classroom operations & systems desired. 

Target Salary Range: $103,000.00 - $134,500.00 per year; commensurate with experience, internal equity, the unit’s available budget, and the candidate’s qualifications.
