Customs Controller M/F Contract Type PERMANENT Job Location Africa, Namibia, WALVIS BAY Working Hours Full time Mission Description Key Performance Area

Customs Clearance & Compliance

  • Prepare, submit, and process customs declarations through ASYCUDA and other customs-related systems in accordance with applicable customs legislation and procedures.
  • Ensure all import, export, transit, warehousing, temporary import/export, and bond entries are accurately captured and submitted within required timelines.
  • Verify commercial invoices, packing lists, certificates of origin, permits, licenses, and other supporting documents for completeness and compliance.
  • Ensure correct tariff classification (HS Codes), customs valuation, and application of relevant duties, taxes, rebates, and exemptions.
  • Interpret and apply customs regulations, trade agreements, and company policies to ensure full compliance.
  • Monitor customs entries from submission through to final release and promptly resolve any delays or queries.

Documentation & Record Management

  • Maintain accurate and complete customs files and records in line with regulatory and company requirements.
  • Ensure all customs documentation is filed, archived, and readily available for audits and inspections.
  • Prepare reports and provide supporting documentation for customs audits, investigations, or internal reviews.

Stakeholder & Customer Management

  • Liaise with Customs authorities, port authorities, freight forwarders, clearing agents, shipping lines, transporters, and other relevant stakeholders to facilitate efficient cargo clearance.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for customers regarding customs-related queries, shipment status updates, and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide guidance and support to internal departments and customers on customs procedures, documentation requirements, and compliance matters.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with regulatory authorities and key operational stakeholders.

Operational Efficiency

  • Monitor shipment movements and customs clearance progress to ensure cargo is released within agreed service levels.
  • Identify and resolve customs-related issues, discrepancies, penalties, detentions, or cargo holds in a timely and professional manner.
  • Proactively follow up on outstanding permits, inspections, customs queries, and release documentation to minimize delays.
  • Support the achievement of departmental productivity, compliance, and customer service targets.

Risk Management & Continuous Improvement

  • Identify potential customs compliance risks and escalate issues to management where necessary.
  • Ensure adherence to company internal controls, customs regulations, and ethical business practices.
  • Stay updated on changes in customs legislation, tariff schedules, trade agreements, and industry best practices.
  • Recommend and implement process improvements to enhance operational efficiency, compliance, and customer satisfaction.
  • Assist with training and mentoring junior staff on customs procedures and regulatory requirements. Profile Reporting & Administration
  • Prepare and submit daily, weekly, and monthly customs clearance reports as required.
  • Monitor and report on customs-related costs, penalties, delays, and operational performance indicators.
  • Maintain accurate records of duty payments, customs inspections, releases, and customs interventions.
  • Support management with operational statistics, compliance reporting, and performance analysis.

Additional Duties

  • Participate in customs audits, inspections, and investigations as required.
  • Assist with special projects, system implementations, and process improvement initiatives.
  • Perform any other customs and logistics-related duties assigned by management.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Grade 12
  • Diploma or Degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Customs Administration, International Trade, or a related field.
  • Customs Clearing and Forwarding qualification will be an added advantage.
  • Minimum 3-5 years' experience in customs clearing and forwarding.
  • Practical experience with ASYCUDA or equivalent customs systems.
  • Experience handling import, export, and transit customs procedures.
  • Knowledge of customs legislation and tariff classification.
