The Front End Customer Service Clerk/Cashier is responsible for providing excellent customer service to all guests at the POS (Point of Sale). They ensure each customer leaves Pete’s Fresh Market with an outstanding experience, while delivering a fast, friendly, and accurate transaction and answering any questions/concerns. As a team member of Pete’s Fresh Market it is important that Pete’s Four Pillars of Value, Aesthetic, Quality, and Customer Service are always exemplified.

Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Maintain a clean, neat, organized and safe work environment.
  • Greet all Customers and provide them with prompt, courteous service and assistance.
  • Initiates returns, resolves customer issues or escalates complaints to management as appropriate.
  • Must have an extensive understanding of all produce codes and weekly sale items, company coupon policy, and store policies required during check-out.
  • Promote for sale any current charitable promotions to Customers.
  • Must have knowledge on the POS system, including but not limited to transactions involving WIC, manufacturer coupons, EBT, cash, check, and debit card purchases.
  • Sort and return “return to stock” items back to normal location with priority; attention given to refrigerated and perishable items.
  • Handle all damaged merchandise in accordance with Company procedures.
  • Perform price check functions, if needed.
  • Issue and keep information involving rain checks updated.
  • Answer phone promptly and in a professional manner and direct as Pete’s policies dictate.
  • Utilize and maintain equipment as required by department; report any equipment problems immediately.
  • Be familiar with the functions of digital processing equipment and be able to differentiate between various types of images and related merchandise, if applicable.
  • Occasionally assist with actual store operation activities such as stocking shelves, assisting with customers, and cleaning, depending upon business needs.

Education/Certifications

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. with 0-3 years of experience in grocery store or similar retail environment.
  • Must have a valid and up to date Food Handler’s Certificate.
  • Must have above average cash handling and basic math/calculating skills.

Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Must be capable of providing and modeling exceptional customer service.
  • Must have excellent communication skills in order to communicate effectively with customers, store leadership, and fellow-team members.
  • Must be detail oriented, self-motivated, and able to work independently or in groups.

Work Environment/ Physical Demands

  • Must have the physical ability to stand for extended periods of time, bend, climb, balance, stoop to grasp objects, kneel, crouch, crawl, frequently push/pull up to 100 lbs., frequently lift and/or move loads up to 50 lbs., and occasionally lift 75 lbs.
  • Occasional high stress when dealing with systems/customers/staff.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule with various shifts, including weekends and holidays, as determined by the store/business needs and as required to ensure adequate store staffing.
  • Must have reliable source of transportation.

Starting hourly rates will be no less than the local minimum wage and will vary based on things like location, experience, and qualifications. All positions are eligible for Overtime, and some positions will have guaranteed Overtime available.

Hourly rate for Suburban Stores is $15-$20

Hourly rate for City of Chicago Stores is $16.60-$20
