Job Description

We are looking for a talented Customer Engineering Product Specialist to join our Cummins Inc. team in Shoreview, MN

The Project Engineer – Technical Specialist serves as a senior technical leader within the Integrated Power Solutions (IPS) organization. In this role, you will develop advanced power system solutions that integrate Cummins technologies—including the Digital Master Control (DMC) and Microgrid Control (MGC) platforms—with low‑ and medium‑voltage switchgear, protective relays, transfer switches, and a wide range of power generation and energy storage assets. These solutions incorporate diesel and natural gas generator sets, battery energy storage systems (BESS), solar generation, fuel cells, and utility interconnections to support mission‑critical and emerging energy applications across multiple market segments.

The successful candidate will leverage customer specifications, power distribution expertise, and protection system knowledge to design and deliver reliable, high‑performance power systems. As the technical lead for complex projects, this role provides direction and guidance to software and hardware engineering teams throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring solutions meet customer requirements and align with Cummins’ engineering and quality standards.

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:

  • Lead technical integration efforts that ensure Cummins products perform optimally within OEM applications.
  • Translate customer needs into actionable product requirements that guide design and development decisions.
  • Strengthen customer relationships by serving as the primary technical liaison throughout product development cycles.
  • Drive installation quality by validating prototype performance and ensuring compliance with Cummins standards.
  • Apply advanced analytical tools to optimize product and system performance across diverse applications.
  • Influence product selection and system configuration decisions that enhance reliability, cost efficiency, and machine performance.
  • Resolve complex installation and application issues through data‑driven problem solving and cross‑functional collaboration.
  • Mentor and guide less experienced engineers to elevate technical capability across the team.

To be successful in this role, you will need the following:

  • Demonstrated expertise in product integration, technical customer management, and cross‑system engineering, with the ability to make sound decisions that improve performance and quality.
  • Strong capability in interpreting customer requirements, managing product specifications, and communicating technical information clearly to diverse audiences.
  • Proven ability to lead complex engineering initiatives, influence technical direction, and collaborate effectively across OEM, engineering, sales, and marketing teams.
  • Advanced problem‑solving skills with the ability to apply modeling, simulation, and analysis tools to guide design and installation decisions.

Education, Licenses, Certifications:

College, university, or equivalent Bachelor's degree in Engineering or appropriate STEM field is required. Post‑graduate (Master's) degree relevant to this discipline area may be required for select roles. This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.

Experience:

Prior Senior or Lead Engineer equivalent work experience in a relevant discipline area is required with a demonstrated track record of technical problem solving and quality decision making. Knowledge of MS Office tools is preferred.

Additional Responsibilities & Preferred Key Competencies:

  • Ability to lead technical design and integration of power generation, distribution, and microgrid control systems, including DMC, MGC, switchgear, transfer switches, BESS, solar, fuel cells, and utility interconnections.
  • Strong capability in interpreting and supervising the design of engineering documentation, including one‑line diagrams, schematics, riser diagrams, and system layouts using AutoCAD Electrical.
  • Proficiency in power system protection, relaying principles, and evaluating system operating sequences to ensure reliability, safety, and selectivity.
  • Familiarity with industrial control & networking hardware and communication protocols such as Modbus RTU/TCP, Ethernet IP, IEC61850, and OPC UA, with preferred experience supporting managed switch configuration.
  • Collaborative mindset with the ability to partner across engineering, manufacturing, commissioning, service, and customer teams to deliver solutions aligned with business objectives.
  • Demonstrated leadership in guiding project teams, coaching junior engineers, and managing work direction for technicians and student employees.
  • Behavioral strengths including adaptability, clear communication, customer focus, decision quality, resourcefulness, and the ability to manage complexity effectively.

Please note that the salary range provided is a good faith estimate on the applicable range. The final salary offer will be determined after considering relevant factors, including a candidate’s qualifications and experience, where appropriate.
