Job Description

This position will be responsible for executing Protection and Control Engineering and Consulting services for Transmission, Distribution and Industrial customers. Reporting through the Grid Automation Global Engineering and Consulting Center of Excellence manager, the Power System Protection and Control Engineer will be part of the global Center of Excellence (CoE) team. Main activity will include electrical studies, like protection coordination, arc flash studies and transient studies. Additional activities can include designing, programming and testing protection and control related applications for power system design and substation automation projects.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the execution of Engineering and Consulting Services inside the Engineering & Consulting CoE. This includes schedule, customer communication, scope of work, budget, and quality.
  • Execute engineering studies and analysis across the transmission, distribution, and industrial segments, such as: short circuit, load flow, arc-flash studies, protective device coordination studies.
  • Perform advanced power system studies and analysis such as reliability studies, feasibility studies, power quality, harmonic studies, harmonic mitigation studies, motor starting, power factor correction, transient stability studies, grid code compliance studies, etc.
  • Design and testing of customized P&C solutions (both in house and at customer installations) to meet user specifications & requirements
  • Prepare test reports, project reports, and project deliverables
  • Analyze and troubleshoot field cases involving GE or third-party relays
  • Participate in preparation of technical papers to be presented at conferences and other venues.
  • Participate in business development activities to grow services, including writing and presenting technical papers and delivering customer presentations.
  • Conduct trainings to regional operation teams on engineering and consulting activities.
  • Assist software tool development to automate the engineering process internally and externally with key utility partners.

Required Qualifications

  • B.S (Masters or higher is preferred) in Electrical, Computer or Power Systems Engineering with very good understanding of power system applications and analysis.

  • Knowledge of power system protection relays, automation, control and communication protocols.

  • Knowledge of power system phenomena in transmission & distribution systems.

  • Ethical and professional business manner in interaction with team members and customers.

  • Technical skills to execute projects, identify opportunities, and write SOW proposals.

  • Strong learning skills.

Desired Characteristics

  • Working experience with study software and power system tools such as ETAP, PSCAD, Power Factory, Mathcad, MATLAB, PSSE, ASPEN, CAPE for automating the power system study process.

  • Familiarity with communication system protocols and architectures in electric power industry (DNP3, MODBUS, IEC61850, OpenFMB, etc.).

  • Flexibility to work in a multi-customer environment and to adapt to requests/comments made in the course of execution.

  • Familiarity with transmission, distribution, and smart grid standards;

  • Strong communication skills including technical writing and presentations
