The Custodian III is responsible for maintaining Madison Middle School in a clean, safe, sanitary, secure, and orderly condition. In addition to routine custodial duties, the employee operates heating and cooling systems, performs minor repairs, prepares the building for daily use and scheduled activities, and assists in protecting school property.

The evening-shift custodian is responsible for cleaning assigned areas after the instructional day and ensuring that the building is properly secured before leaving.

Qualifications

  1. High school diploma, equivalent, or ability to meet applicable county and state employment requirements.
  2. Meet the statutory definition and qualifications for the Custodian III classification under West Virginia law.
  3. Successfully complete any competency testing required by West Virginia law or Boone County Board of Education policy.
  4. Knowledge of accepted cleaning, sanitation, and building-maintenance practices.
  5. Ability to operate heating and cooling systems and perform minor building repairs.
  6. Ability to safely operate custodial equipment, including buffers, scrubbers, carpet-cleaning equipment, vacuum cleaners, wet vacuums, and related equipment.
  7. Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  8. Ability to read and understand product labels, safety information, work orders, and equipment instructions.
  9. Ability to work independently and complete assigned duties within the established work schedule.
  10. Ability to communicate effectively with administrators, employees, students, visitors, and members of the public.
  11. Ability to successfully complete required background checks and employment screenings.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Clean and sanitize classrooms, offices, restrooms, hallways, stairways, locker rooms, common areas, and other assigned portions of Madison Middle School.
  2. Sweep, dust mop, wet mop, vacuum, scrub, strip, wax, and polish floors as necessary.
  3. Clean and disinfect desks, tables, counters, sinks, fixtures, doors, glass, and other surfaces.
  4. Clean, sanitize, and restock restrooms with soap, paper towels, toilet tissue, and other necessary supplies.
  5. Empty waste containers and transport refuse and recyclable materials to designated collection areas.
  6. Replace trash-can liners and maintain waste-collection areas in a clean and orderly condition.
  7. Clean windows, glass doors, display cases, and other glass surfaces.
  8. Clean walls, baseboards, vents, light fixtures, furniture, and equipment as assigned.
  9. Operate and monitor the school's heating and cooling systems in accordance with established procedures.
  10. Report heating, cooling, plumbing, electrical, security, and building-system concerns to the principal or appropriate supervisor.
  11. Perform minor repairs to fixtures, furniture, equipment, doors, hardware, and other building components when qualified and assigned.
  12. Replace light bulbs, ceiling tiles, filters, and other routine building items when appropriate and safe.
  13. Inspect assigned areas for safety hazards, water leaks, property damage, vandalism, or maintenance concerns.
  14. Immediately report unsafe conditions, emergencies, suspicious activity, and significant property damage.
  15. Set up and arrange tables, chairs, equipment, and other materials for school programs, meetings, athletic events, and community activities.
  16. Clean and restore assigned areas following meetings, athletic events, performances, and other after-school activities.
  17. Secure classrooms, offices, windows, exterior doors, and other designated areas at the conclusion of the evening shift.
  18. Activate security systems and complete building-closing procedures as directed.
  19. Maintain possession and control of assigned keys, access cards, alarm codes, and security information.
  20. Assist with snow and ice removal from sidewalks, entrances, steps, ramps, and other assigned areas.
  21. Apply ice-melting products and place warning signs or barriers when necessary.
  22. Maintain entrances and walkways in a reasonably safe and accessible condition.
  23. Receive, move, distribute, and store supplies, furniture, equipment, and deliveries as directed.
  24. Maintain custodial closets, storage rooms, tools, supplies, and equipment in a clean, organized, and secure condition.
  25. Monitor custodial supply levels and notify the supervisor when additional materials are needed.
  26. Use cleaning chemicals only for their intended purposes and according to manufacturer instructions.
  27. Follow applicable Safety Data Sheets and requirements for chemical storage, labeling, handling, and disposal.
  28. Wear required personal protective equipment and follow established safety procedures.
  29. Use wet-floor signs, barriers, and other warnings to protect students, employees, and visitors from hazards.
  30. Follow district procedures concerning bloodborne pathogens, bodily-fluid cleanup, hazardous materials, asbestos, mold, and indoor-air-quality concerns.
  31. Assist during emergencies, utility interruptions, inclement weather, or other situations affecting school operations.
  32. Coordinate evening custodial work with school activities to minimize disruption.
  33. Treat students, employees, visitors, and coworkers respectfully and professionally.
  34. Maintain confidentiality concerning students, employees, security procedures, and school operations.
  35. Demonstrate regular and reliable attendance.
  36. Perform other duties assigned by the principal, supervisor, or Superintendent.

Evening-Shift Responsibilities

The evening-shift Custodian III shall:

  1. Begin assigned cleaning after classrooms and school areas are no longer in regular use.
  2. Coordinate work around athletic practices, meetings, performances, and other evening activities.
  3. Check assigned areas after activities have concluded.
  4. Ensure that restrooms and common areas are cleaned and restocked for the following school day.
  5. Turn off unnecessary lights and equipment in accordance with district energy-conservation procedures.
  6. Check for running water, unusual odors, excessive heat or cold, and other signs of building-system problems.
  7. Verify that designated doors and windows are closed and locked.
  8. Report any person remaining in the building after scheduled activities to the appropriate administrator or supervisor.
  9. Complete the established building-closing and security checklist before leaving.
  10. Promptly report conditions that could affect the safe opening of school the following day.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The employee must demonstrate:

  1. Knowledge of custodial cleaning methods, sanitation procedures, and appropriate chemical use.
  2. Knowledge of basic heating and cooling system operations.
  3. Knowledge of minor building-repair methods.
  4. Ability to safely use custodial tools, machines, and equipment.
  5. Ability to recognize and report safety, security, and maintenance concerns.
  6. Ability to organize work and complete assigned areas within the scheduled shift.
  7. Ability to work without continuous supervision.
  8. Ability to maintain accurate records, checklists, and supply requests.
  9. Ability to respond appropriately to unexpected situations and emergencies.
  10. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Physical Requirements

The employee must be able to:

  1. Stand and walk for extended periods.
  2. Bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, reach, twist, push, and pull.
  3. Lift, carry, move, and position custodial supplies, furniture, equipment, and materials.
  4. Operate buffers, scrubbers, vacuum cleaners, carpet cleaners, wet vacuums, and other custodial equipment.
  5. Climb and work from ladders or approved access equipment.
  6. Work above shoulder level and near floor level.
  7. Perform repetitive hand and arm movements.
  8. Maintain sufficient strength, balance, coordination, vision, hearing, and manual dexterity to safely perform assigned duties.
  9. Work both indoors and outdoors in varying temperatures and weather conditions.
  10. Wear required personal protective equipment.

The employee may be exposed to:

  5. Mechanical rooms, storage areas, rooftops, or other building-service areas.

Evaluation

Job performance will be evaluated by the Principal and/or designated supervisor in accordance with Boone County Board of Education policy and applicable West Virginia law.

Terms of Employment

The employment term, work hours, compensation, and benefits shall be established by the Boone County Board of Education and identified in the official job posting and service personnel salary schedule. Compensation shall be based on the Custodian III, Pay Grade C classification.
