Salary Range: $22.38 - $31.16 Hourly
Area Cooperative Educational Services, CT, is seeking a Custodian, full-time (40 hours per week) to work in various locations throughout the agency. Applicants should have excellent interpersonal skills, be dependable and able to work well with adults and school children including students with special needs.
Experience in maintenance and basic repairs preferred. Some computer skills necessary. Must be able to work closely with supervisors to ensure a high level of building and grounds maintenance.
Normal hours are 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 pm, subject to change by management. Must be available to respond to situations and emergency notifications after hours and weekends.
Hourly
rate commensurate with experience.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Duties of this position include, but are not limited to:
- Maintain assigned work areas for the purpose of ensuring a safe, sanitary, and attractive environment (e.g. empty wastebaskets, clean and disinfect, dust, wash mirrors, wash windows, inside and out).
- Perform daily cleaning duties including manual tasks in mopping, scrubbing, dusting, polishing, sweeping, vacuuming, shampooing and other housekeeping duties as required.
- Replenish classroom and rest room supplies (e.g. paper towels, toilet paper, soap) for the purpose of ensuring adequate quantities for daily use.
- Prepare facilities and grounds for daily operations (e.g. turn on lights, raise flag, unlock doors) to ensure facilities are operational and safe for occupancy.
- Maintain building premises, including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas, neat and clean at all times (e.g. remove rubbish, shovel, plow, and sand walkways, parking areas, and steps).
- Assist in maintaining school grounds for the purpose of safe and attractive condition.
- Maintain cleaning equipment sanitary and neat.
- Move and arrange furniture and equipment for meetings, activities, and events.
- Provide and support improvement of indoor quality as outlined in the Tools for Schools Manual.
- Maintain the green cleaning program in accordance with ACES policy.
- Follow state, federal and board safety practices, policies, and procedures.
- Daily attendance and punctuality are required.
- Report vandalism, damage to school property, security issues, and safety hazards to Supervisor and Director of Facilities.
- Respond to immediate safety and operational concerns (e.g. facility damage, alarms, and plumbing issues) and take appropriate action to resolve them.
- Assume responsibility for the opening and closing of the building each school day, as scheduled.
- Assist in facilities and grounds security by locking all windows, doors, and gates at the end of work shift.
- Perform summer maintenance (e.g. clean floors, move furniture, paint) for the purpose of completing and/or facilitating summer projects.
- Work cohesively with District administration, co-workers, school staff, parents, students, and community organizations using district facilities
- Wear appropriate professional attire (e.g. uniform polo shirts).
- Complete required federal, state, or district training.
- Adequate use of technology resources in accordance with district policies and procedures (e.g. email, web applications).
- Communicates effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Maintains a responsible attitude regarding performance and attendance.
- Performs other assignments as requested by supervisor.

- Strength needed to lift and/or to move up to 50 lbs. occasionally; lift and/or move up to 40 lbs. frequently; and up to 20 lbs. constantly.

- Mobility and dexterity to work in a typical school setting.
- Vision including frequent near acuity, occasional far acuity, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

- High school diploma or equivalent, preferred.
- Ability to read and understand product labels, warnings, and safety precautions.
- Knowledge of commercial grade cleaning techniques, equipment, supplies, and chemicals.
- Proficient use of tools and equipment necessary to maintain the facilities and grounds.
- Must be available and flexible to work day or night shift.
- Ability to work cooperatively with others and be flexible.
- Ability to work under pressure by adapting to changing work priorities.
- Ability to perform routine custodial tasks with minimum supervision.
