JOB DESCRIPTION

Summary/Objective
East Side House (ESH) is a community resource in the Bronx and Northern Manhattan. We believe education is the key that enables all people to create economic and civic opportunities for themselves, their families, and their community. ESH’s facilities and custodial services align with our mission by providing high quality programs and services within community centers and school partnerships.
Reporting to the Facility Manager, the Custodial Worker is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, sanitation, and general upkeep of ESH facilities. The Custodial Worker performs a wide range of janitorial tasks to support daily operations and ensure a safe and healthy environment for staff and program participants. As a member of the Facilities team, the Custodial Worker is expected to maintain high cleanliness standards and respond promptly to custodial needs. This position does not supervise others but interacts regularly with program staff, supervisors, and visitors.
With a focus on hygiene, safety, and presentation, the Custodial Worker provides essential cleaning and maintenance support services to meet daily operational needs.
Travel Requirement: This position is assigned to multiple agency locations and requires daily travel between community centers, early childhood education sites, senior centers, and administrative facilities throughout the Bronx. Reliable transportation between sites is required.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Facility Manager, the Custodial Worker will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following:
- Sweep, mop, vacuum, and clean floors in hallways, offices, classrooms, and common areas.
- Clean and sanitize restrooms, kitchens, and eating areas daily.
- Remove trash, recyclables, and debris from interior and exterior areas.
- Refill supplies such as soap, paper towels, and toilet paper.
- Clean windows, walls, and surfaces as needed.
- Follow cleaning schedules and document completed tasks.
- Alert supervisor to repair or safety concerns (e.g., leaks, broken fixtures).
- Assist with room setup/breakdown for meetings or events.
- Support occasional deep cleaning, including waxing floors and cleaning equipment.
- Travel to multiple sites as needed for coverage, including during hot or cold weather.

QualificationsTo perform this position successfully, the Custodial Worker must be able to fulfill all the elements of the job description to the highest standard and be able to work well with colleagues in a high-energy and collaborative work environment. Additional qualifications include:
Education / Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- Minimum of 1–3 years custodial or janitorial experience
- Experience using commercial cleaning tools and chemicals
Competencies
- Knowledge of proper cleaning methods and techniques
- Attention to detail and cleanliness standards
- Time management and reliability
- Ability to lift heavy objects and operate cleaning equipment
- Ability to follow safety procedures and instructions
- Teamwork and communication skills
Clearance
Employees must be clear to work at ESH. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of background checks and/or screenings.

Physical Demands
This role involves routine lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods, as well as the ability to move items up to 50 pounds. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
Expected Work Schedule
The work schedule expected for this position is Monday through Friday, with possible weekend shifts as needed, depending on program and facility needs. Daytime and evening hours may apply. The schedule may be adjusted based on ESH’s operational requirements, with notice provided whenever possible.
