General Statement:
The Fleet Science Center’s Custodial Supervisor supports the Fleet’s Mission and Visitor Experience Philosophy by overseeing the janitorial services (cleaning and maintenance) of the entire Science Center building, including carpets, bathrooms, lighting, hardware, etc.
The Custodial Supervisor will serve as the primary liaison between our organization and the third-party custodial service. Key responsibilities include scheduling daily custodial staff, supervising their performance, providing on-site support, and ensuring all cleaning standards are met. The Supervisor will also oversee inventory management, ensuring that all supplies are stocked and ordered as needed. This role requires strong organizational skills, excellent communication, and the ability to maintain a positive, productive working relationship with both in-house and third-party teams.
Bilingual in English and Spanish required.
Reports to: Director of Facilities
Primary Duties and Responsibilities, including mental requirements of position:
- Operate specialized equipment, including floor buffers and carpet extractors, to maintain and clean hard surfaces and carpeted areas.
- Clean restrooms, empty trash/recycle bins, and pick up trash or debris on the floor throughout the building.
- Sweep, mop, and buff hard floor surfaces.
- Manage inventory and ordering of all janitorial supplies.
- Allocate custodial team workloads based on daily and special event operations.
- Create and update SOP’s and MSDS documents as required.
- Lead and train staff in facility cleaning and floor maintenance.
- Plan and schedule deep cleaning of areas as needed.
- Maintain knowledge of safety and emergency plan procedures.
- Partner with third party custodial service providers to align on goals and service delivery.

Tools and equipment used to perform this position: broom, vacuum, janitorial supply cart, buffer, carpet extractor, cleaning supplies, including but not limited to, bleach, window cleaner, towels.
Supervision, direction, or guidance provided for this position: Position performs routine duties without direct supervision. Supervision is required to set priorities, train on new responsibilities, and monitor work.
Physical Requirements of this Position:
Medium Work: Position involves the ability to frequently or constantly exert up to 20 pounds of force and occasionally exert up to 50 pounds of force to move objects.
Business Location Presence: This position requires physical presence at the business location during all assigned working hours in order to adequately perform all duties.
QualificationsExperience, education, or skills required of the incumbent in this position:
- Minimum of one year’s experience in a supervisory position.
- Experience with operating carpet extractors and floor buffers
- Must be able to speak and write in English and Spanish.
- Familiarity with best practices regarding facility cleaning and maintenance, including infection prevention controls related to the COVID 19 pandemic.
- Knowledge of Balboa Park, San Diego attractions, and the Fleet Science Center extremely helpful.
- Ability to communicate effectively with patrons and staff, both in person and over the phone or e-mail.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and familiar with online scheduling and timekeeping software programs preferred.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
