Job Description

Overview

This is custodial work entailing responsibility for assisting in booking, searching, guarding and attending to the welfare of prisoners in the cell area. Under immediate supervision, some independence of judgement and action is exercised while ensuring the security of prisoners. Work performance is evaluated by a superior in terms of continued alertness, attitude and adherence to well defined practices and procedures.

Examples of key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Maintain surveillance over prisoners, prepare and serve meals; maintain non-complex records i.e.: Keeping of Prisoners reports (KOP's).
  • Inspect occupants of cells at frequent and regular intervals, reporting any unusual occurrences.
  • Maintain prisoner log book by noting results of cell inspections, unusual occurrences, visitations, prisoner requests, removal of prisoners and change of guard.
  • Dispense medication(s) to prisoners as authorized by the Watch Commander.
  • Report all incidents concerning the care of prisoners immediately to the Watch Commander or their designate.
  • Responsible for the inventory of all office and kitchen supplies, ordering and restocking on an on-going basis, including all general equipment used in the cell block (i.e.: computers, printers, shredding equipment).
  • Provide administrative support to the Officer in Charge (OIC).
  • Maintain all monitoring devices, including all internal and external camera equipment and gate.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Sound knowledge of the policies and practices, methods and procedures involved in the control, custody, welfare and escorting of prisoners.
  • Ability to understand the needs and attitudes of prisoners and to deal with the same in a firm, discreet and compassionate manner.
  • Ability and willingness to deal with prisoners who may be intoxicated and/or in unclean physical condition.
  • Ability and willingness to dispense authorized prescribed medications to prisoners with special medical needs.
  • Ability to maintain mental alertness, to act quickly, appropriately and calmly in emergency situations and to exercise moderate physical strength and agility as the circumstance warrants.
  • Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to maintain non-complex records.
  • Ability to complete the RCMP Guard Training Program every 2 years.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an Enhanced RCMP Security Clearance.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent supplemented by a minimum of one (1) year of experience in custodial, detention or other related work OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's Licence for the Province of British Columbia.
  • WCB Occupational First Aid Level 1 Certificate or equivalent.
