Function / Position Summary

The purpose of this position is to provide custodial coverage and support for evening school events and rental programs, perform minor maintenance tasks in areas occupied during the day, and complete scheduled custodial duties. This position takes responsibility for building cleanliness, security, and safety during scheduled events and at the end of the shift. Flexibility in hours required due to building emergencies and the needs of the building.

Job Duties / Responsibilities

  • Perform daily custodial duties, including, but not limited to, mopping, sweeping, vacuuming, trash removal, restocking supplies, and restroom sanitation.
  • Complete semi-annual and annual deep cleaning and project duties, including, but not limited to, floor stripping and waxing, carpet cleaning, restroom maintenance, and graffiti removal.
  • Support daily, special event and rental setups, including, but not limited to, furniture arrangement, space preparation, equipment staging and event clean up and tear down.
  • Conduct facility maintenance, including, but not limited to, replacing ceiling tiles, light ballasts and light bulbs, changing HVAC filters, outlets, switches and flush valves, furniture assembly and adjustment, locker repairs, and touch-up painting.
  • Complete nightly checks on building systems, notify appropriate Plant Operations personnel of problems and complete any appropriate documentation.
  • Respond to custodial service requests from staff and administration in a timely and courteous manner, including freight delivery.
  • Initiate requests and submit orders for supplies, materials, parts and tools following District purchasing procedures including obtaining quotes as needed from approved vendors.
  • Maintain "on-call" status to respond to emergency and/or after-hour events such as fire alarms, break-ins, snow/ice management or severe weather damage.
  • Adhere to security protocols for locking and unlocking doors. Actively monitor and report any security concerns, and immediately address urgent safety issues (e.g., spills, broken glass). Regularly perform basic safety checks during your shifts.
  • Assist with maintaining adequate inventory and request supplies as needed.
  • Initiate, monitor, and complete work orders and supervisor requests through the district's work order and email systems.
  • Work independently or collaboratively with all district staff and contractors to meet building needs.
  • Perform general grounds upkeep duties, including snow/ice removal, salting, and landscape maintenance, including trash/debris pick up.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required prior to start date.
  • Bilingual � Spanish/English (written/verbal) preferred.
  • Valid Illinois Driver's License preferred.

Experience / Knowledge

  • One (1) year experience in custodial related duties.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work cooperatively and effectively with adults, students and community members.
  • Ability to read and understand work orders, safety procedures, equipment manuals, and other job-related materials; communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and the public; and accurately complete required documentation.
  • Basic computer knowledge.
  • Ability to use standard hand tools.
  • Ability to operate industrial-rated cleaning equipment, including, but not limited to, automatic floor scrubbers, carpet extractors, burnishers, and wet/dry vacuums.
  • Ability to operate, troubleshoot, and perform maintenance and minor repairs on mechanical and building equipment.
  • Experience in handling various cleaning chemicals used in the field (preferred).

Physical Demands

  • Ability to sit, stand, kneel, stoop, climb stairs, and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lift in excess of 75 lbs. with proper technique.
  • Ability to work safely from stepladder, aerial lifts, and/or scaffolding at varying heights, up to 40 ft.
  • Ability to push and pull up to 100 lbs. with proper technique.
  • Ability to work in a variety of environmental conditions, including exposure to extreme heat, cold, humidity, and inclement weather for prolonged periods.

Terms of Employment

  • This is a 12-month position.
  • Salary and benefits are as established by the agreement between ESSO and the Board of Education.
  • The starting rate for this role is $19.69/hr.
  • Flexibility in work days/hours and overtime may be necessary.
