The Curator of Facilities provides operational oversight for the maintenance of all zoo facilities and physical property. This role has direct supervisory responsibility for the Graphics, Maintenance, and Ride Operations departments, as well as for coordinating with external contractors. They are responsible for developing and monitoring budgets and long- ranges facilitates plans for the Zoo. This person manages departmental personnel to include supervision, recruitment, retention, training, development, commendation and disciplinary action. This person interacts regularly with other zoo departments and assists them in achieving their goals. This position participates in a mandatory on-call rotation.”

Supervision of Managers and Reporting Departments

  • Play a key role in evaluating applicants for open positions and in selecting final candidates.
  • Recognize exceptional performance and reward employees when appropriate.
  • Recognize employee deficiencies and take corrective action in consultation with supervisors when needed.
  • Attend the Curator meeting to report on the events that have occurred in areas of responsibility.
  • Initiate and facilitate on-call personnel for emergency events.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation during emergency situations.

Develop Departmental Operations and Budgets

  • Perform budget development, administration, and analysis for reporting departments.
  • Monitor and acquire area supplies and resources.
  • Oversee development and administration of standard operating procedures for reporting departments.
  • Inspect facilities for security and facility maintenance.
  • Monitor utility usage and develop reports for the Facilities Director.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of safe operation procedures for various types of equipment.

Graphics and Exhibits Operations Oversight

  • Direct the production of effective interpretive and non-interpretive art and design solutions for exhibits, guest amenities, and staff.
  • Direct the design, fabrication, installation, and maintenance of experiential installations and guest amenities--including informative graphics, artificial nature replicas, architectural embellishments, special effects, sensory elements, wayfinding, and point-of-sale --ensuring alignment with current messaging, fabrication techniques, equipment, and materials.

Facilities & Maintenance Operations Oversight

  • Oversee maintenance of buildings, infrastructure, fleet, and equipment, ensuring timely completion of preventive maintenance and repairs.
  • Maintain the ability to read, comprehend, and instruct from plans, blueprints, and technical drawings to support project execution and maintenance activities.
  • Oversee fleet maintenance coordination, including vehicles and carts, ensuring proper documentation and compliance with maintenance standards

Ride Operations & Guest Infrastructure Operations Oversight

  • Ensure ride systems (e.g., trains, boats) are properly maintained, inspected, and operating safely.
  • Coordinate vendor support and maintenance schedules for ride systems.
  • Oversee event setup and infrastructure support for programs and special events

Minimum Qualifications: High School diploma or equivalent. Five years of experience in Construction or Facilities Maintenance. Three years of supervisory experience. Up to three years(all) of supervisory experience may be substituted with education that provides applicable knowledge and skills. Per Sedgwick County policy, this is a driving level position that requires a valid US driver’s license without restrictions and current proof of automobile insurance.

Preferred Qualifications: Seven or more years of demonstrated effective leadership in facility management. Bachelor’s degree in related field.
