Job Description
We are looking for a talented Health, Safety and Environment Manager to join our team specializing in HSE for our Southern Africa HSE Department in Johannesburg, South Africa.
In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways
- Lead the development and execution of short- and long-term HSE strategies, driving a strong, sustainable safety culture across moderately complex site(s).
- Implement and continuously improve HSE management systems to ensure full compliance with Cummins standards, legal regulations, and industry best practices.
- Build strong cross-functional partnerships, ensuring clear accountability and active employee engagement in HSE programs, policies, and initiatives.
- Drive proactive risk management by leading hazard identification, environmental aspect identification, and risk assessments to address gaps and improve compliance.
- Set clear HSE targets and objectives, translating strategy into actionable plans and ensuring timely execution and measurable performance improvements.
- Provide expert leadership in daily HSE operations, including incident investigations, contractor safety, emergency preparedness, and environmental sustainability initiatives.
- Use data-driven insights to monitor performance, identify trends, and implement continuous improvement actions to enhance HSE metrics and outcomes.
- Coach and develop teams while fostering a learning culture, ensuring capability building, succession readiness, and alignment with emerging HSE trends and best practices.
To be successful in this role you will need the following:
- Strong HSE leadership and system integration capability: Ability to drive the implementation and consolidation of regional HSE programs into a cohesive, efficient management framework aligned to global and regional standards.
- Stakeholder influence and collaboration skills: Proven ability to partner with regional leadership, cross-functional teams, and contractors to align on objectives, influence decisions, and drive consistent HSE outcomes.
- Operational execution and accountability mindset: Demonstrated ability to manage compliance, audits, reporting, and resource allocation while ensuring follow-through on corrective actions and measurable performance improvements.
- Risk management and problem-solving expertise: Capability to proactively identify risks, lead incident investigations, manage change, and resolve complex HSE and sustainability challenges while standardising best practices across sites.
- People-focused leadership and culture building: Ability to coach and develop diverse teams, foster psychological safety, and drive a culture of continuous improvement, proactive behaviours, and safety ownership across the region.
Education/ Experience
- College, university, or equivalent degree in Occupational Health, Safety or Environmental required.
- Professional certification in HSE-related field preferred.
- Significant relevant experience required, including management of health, safety and/or environmental ISO Standards required.
- Requires 5-7 years of experience in HSE and 1-2 years management experience.
