The Department of Event Management, Dining, and Hospitality is one of 15 departments within the Division of Student Affairs. It provides the campus community and guests with high-quality, efficient, and innovative event services and dining options in a variety of settings dedicated to accentuating and enhancing the campus experience in a diverse community.

This position plays an integral role in accomplishing this goal by training and supervising the culinary staff and directing the preparation and service of menu items in residential dining centers. Our staff utilizes a broad range of culinary skills and equipment to prepare fresh and delicious menu items, frequently participating in display cooking, utilizing woks, salad preparation, grilling, and pizza making to enhance our customers' experience.

Salary Rate / Pay Rate

As of July 1, 2026: $25.67 per hour

Required Qualifications

1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Three (3) years (36 months) of general work experience in quantity cooking in a commercial setting.
3. One (1) year (12 months) of experience comparable to that described in the lower level of this series. This includes higher-level functions such as planning, food procurement, cleaning supplies and equipment, inventory control, menus, keeping records and reports, and staff supervision.
4. A final candidate must complete a post-offer pre-employment physical exam. Employment is contingent on the successful result of the pre-employment physical.

1. Full knowledge and acceptance of principles of diversity.
2. Supervisory and leadership skills; ability to train and instruct employees; ability to organize, prioritize, and assign duties.
3. Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce all policies and procedures, especially those pertaining to sanitation and safety.
4. Strong interpersonal skills; cooperative, flexible, and customer-oriented; ability to deal effectively with employee and customer conflicts; the ability to produce results working as part of a team or committee.
5. Knowledge of food values and nutrition; knowledge of materials and methods used in preparing food on a large scale.
6. Ability to read, follow and correct recipes; ability to plan simple menus with managers.
7. Computer skills, including menu management systems; accurate record keeping skills.
8. Current Illinois Food Service Sanitation Manager Certificate.

This position requires standing, walking, use of fingers and hands, reaching, lifting, kneeling, stooping, crouching, speaking, seeing, hearing, tasting, and smelling. It also requires the ability to stand for an extended time without a significant rest period. Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs. frequently and 50 lbs. occasionally.

The Civil Service examination for this classification is based on your application materials and responses to the supplemental questions. No participation other than submission of applicant materials is required from applicants that qualify to take the exam. If you meet the minimum required qualifications for this position, you will receive a score calculated based on your education and experience, and your name will be placed on the active employment register by exam score. After the application deadline, the names within the top three scores will be referred to the department for interview.

This is a full-time position on an academic calendar. It will be subject to academic break lay-off (such as spring break, summer break).
