A CSU (Commissioning, Startup, and) Engineer for an Air Separation Unit (ASU) is a specialized process engineer. They are responsible for transitioning a newly constructed cryogenic plant from its mechanical completion into full, reliable, and safe commercial operations.
Key ResponsibilitiesPre-Commissioning & Commissioning: Inspect and test plant equipment (compressors, expanders, cold boxes, molecular sieves, and distillation columns) to ensure they meet engineering designs and safety standards.
Plant Startup: Execute plant purges, pre-cooling, liquefaction, and cryogenic distillation to reach specified product purities (e.g., 99.5% oxygen, nitrogen, and argon).Performance Testing: Conduct operational and turndown tests to ensure the unit achieves designed output, efficiency, and energy consumption guarantees.
Troubleshooting: Resolve process bottlenecks, pressure drop issues, temperature anomalies, and equipment vibrations during early operations.Safety & HAZOP Compliance: Enforce strict industrial safety protocols (especially critical for high-pressure pure oxygen systems) and participate in hazard and operability studies.
Documentation & Handoff: Write detailed Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), alarm response plans, and train the permanent operations team.Typical
Requirements
Education: Degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or process-related discipline.
Experience: 15+ years of hands-on operator or engineering experience with industrial gas facilities, specifically focusing on cryogenic ASUs and molecular sieve technologies (TSA).
Core Competencies: Deep understanding of thermodynamics, gas compression, cryogenic distillation, and process control systems (DCS/SCADA).
Safety Certifications: Relevant local safety credentials (often including Confined Space Entry, Fall Protection, WHMIS/OSHA equivalents)
