The Role

These positions will assist elementary school children in crossing roads safely at designated school crossing locations.

Vacancies:Up to 10

Term

Please note that the anticipated term of employment, in accordance with the 2026-2027 elementary academic calendar, will be:

  • August 24, 2026 – June 30, 2027

Successful candidates will be expected to be available for the full duration of the employment term.

Mandatory Training

Additionally, all crossing guard employees must be available to attend mandatory training, which will be scheduled as follows:

  • Monday, August 24, 2026 & Tuesday, August 25, 2026

Working Conditions

  • Outdoors in all weather conditions

Hours of Work

  • Up to 15 hours per week
  • Shifts are approximately one hour at each of the morning and afternoon bell times
  • Some crossings also require lunch hour coverage during regularly scheduled school calendar days.

The Candidate

We're seeking a reliable and safety-oriented individual with keen attention and quick decision-making skills that will make a lasting impact, creating a safe and welcoming environment for the community every day

Qualifications

  • Recent Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC) valid within the last three (3) months is required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with school-aged children and interact and cooperate with people of diverse ages and backgrounds.
  • Wear mandatory safety equipment supplied by the Corporation of the City of Sarnia.
  • Able to monitor traffic flow to locate safe gaps through which pedestrians can cross.
  • Must be able to work in all forms of weather, including extremes of heat, humidity, cold, rain, snow, sleet and wind.
  • Must have the ability to perform the physical aspects of this position including standing and walking for prolonged periods of time and carrying a hand-held stop sign.
