Sompo has a unique opportunity for a VP, Livestockin our Livestock team.
The Vice President, Livestock is responsible for strategy and execution of AgriSompo’s livestock insurance, leading the business unit end to end. This executive sets the strategic direction of the business unit in the market, working with the national marketing team, is responsible for business outcomes, and is accountable for every aspect of performance—planning, business and market strategy, technology prioritization, operations (underwriting and claims), agency and distribution relationships, commission and expense management. The role demands a deep understanding of the livestock industry and the federal insurance products alongside best-in-class expertise in livestock risk management, including hedging, livestock futures, and options trading (puts and calls). This individual must understand, engage with and deliver tailored value to multiple audiences—from large, sophisticated insurance brokers to local agents and ranchers—and provide the innovative leadership, market analysis, and risk management capabilities required to guide strategic initiatives and drive unit success.

What you’ll be doing:
Serve as the subject matter expert on livestock hedging and trading strategies, including futures, options, forward contracts, and swaps.
Ownership of the livestock business unit, holding full accountability for its end-to-end performance, profitability, and growth in the market.
Set the business and market strategy for the livestock business unit, defining its competitive positioning and go-to-market approach.
Lead all operations of the livestock program, including underwriting and claims, ensuring disciplined execution and high-quality service.
Prioritize technology investments and drive the technology roadmap to advance the business unit’s products, analytics, and operational efficiency.
Own and cultivate agency and distribution relationships, expanding the program’s reach across brokers, agents, and ranchers.
Lead annual and long-range planning for the business unit, setting goals, budgets, and performance targets.
Apply deep understanding of the livestock industry to anticipate market shifts and position the business unit for sustained success.
Develop and oversee the strategic vision for the livestock division, aligning with organizational goals and industry trends.
Identify, assess, and manage risks associated with livestock trading and insurance portfolios, ensuring financial stability and minimizing exposure to losses.
Provide accurate forecasts of the livestock market and supply chain dynamics to inform decision-making and product development.

What you’ll bring:
Required: Bachelor’s Degree/Equivalent or Equivalent Experience
Preferred:
Demonstrated expertise in livestock hedging strategies, including all aspects of hedging.
Seven years of prior experience in crop or livestock insurance with a focus on livestock risk management.
Demonstrated experience owning a business unit or P&L, including responsibility for operations, strategy, and financial management.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Expert knowledge of livestock hedging strategies, including futures, options, swaps, and forward contracts.
Strong leadership and team-building skills, with the ability to coach and engage teams to achieve high performance.
Exceptional analytical and strategic planning capabilities, with a focus on risk management and market growth.
Outstanding communication and stakeholder management skills to provide value to diverse audiences, including large brokers and local ranchers.
Proficient in financial modeling, P&L management, and performance analysis.
Agile and adaptable in a dynamic business environment, with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
End-result-oriented with strong execution capabilities and a commitment to achieving performance targets.
Proven ability to own and lead a business unit end to end, including profit-and-loss ownership and full accountability for results.
Deep understanding of the livestock industry, its markets, participants, and supply-chain dynamics.
Experience leading insurance operations, including underwriting and claims.
Ability to set business and market strategy and translate it into executable, measurable plans.
Skill in prioritizing technology investments and managing agency and distribution relationships, commissions, and expenses
Salary Range: Actual compensation for this role will depend on several factors including the cost of living associated with your work location, your qualifications, skills, competencies, and relevant experience.
