Job Description

The Critical Facility Technician Journeyman - HVAC supports mission-critical, data center, and commercial mechanical operations across the Metro Atlanta market. This role is responsible for performing preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, inspections, documentation, and customer-facing HVAC support while maintaining strict safety, quality, and uptime standards.

This position is designed for an experienced HVAC journeyman who can work independently, support critical facility operations, communicate effectively with customers and leadership, and help ensure mechanical systems operate safely and reliably.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong troubleshooting skills across HVAC, mechanical, electrical, refrigerant, airflow, and controls systems.
  • Ability to work independently in customer-facing commercial and mission-critical environments.
  • Strong judgment to determine when to repair, escalate, quote, or involve specialized support.
  • Ability to prioritize work based on safety, customer impact, equipment criticality, and uptime risk.
  • Comfortable working in live critical environments where communication, documentation, and procedural discipline are required.
  • Strong communication skills with customers, vendors, dispatch, technicians, and leadership.
  • Detail-oriented approach to PM records, service reports, refrigerant logs, deficiency notes, and follow-up recommendations.
  • Professional appearance, dependable attendance, and ability to represent ABM well in the field.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on HVAC journeyman with strong commercial mechanical experience and the ability to support mission-critical customers across the Atlanta market. This person should be comfortable performing PMs, troubleshooting equipment, completing repairs, using BAS/BMS systems, documenting work accurately, communicating with customers, coordinating with vendors, and protecting uptime in live critical environments.

  • Perform preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair work on commercial and mission-critical HVAC systems.

  • Service and maintain RTUs, AHUs, CRAC/CRAH units, split systems, heat pumps, fan coils, VAVs, exhaust fans, pumps, condensers, and related mechanical equipment.

  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, airflow, refrigerant, and controls-related issues and recommend appropriate corrective action.

  • Use BAS/BMS systems to monitor equipment status, support troubleshooting, verify alarms, place equipment in maintenance mode, and confirm proper system operation.

  • Support data center and critical facility uptime requirements by following site-specific procedures, MOPs, SOPs, EOPs, LOTO, and change-control practices.

  • Respond to alarms, service calls, urgent repairs, and customer concerns in a safe, timely, and professional manner.

  • Complete work orders, PM documentation, service reports, inspection records, refrigerant logs, and related maintenance documentation accurately and on time.

  • Identify deficiencies, communicate repair needs, support quote development, and escalate complex issues when needed.

  • Coordinate with vendors, subcontractors, site teams, dispatch, service leadership, and ABM management to complete PMs, repairs, inspections, and project work.

  • Maintain safe work practices, including proper use of PPE, LOTO, SDS, electrical safety awareness, refrigerant handling, ladder safety, and housekeeping.

  • Support field-based service, project work, PM ramp-up, and customer site coverage throughout the Metro Atlanta market.

  • Work overtime, flexible schedules, on-call rotation, or emergency response as business needs require.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required:

  • 5+ years of commercial, industrial, institutional, or mission-critical HVAC experience.
  • Journeyman-level HVAC skill set with hands-on experience troubleshooting and repairing commercial HVAC equipment.
  • Experience with RTUs, AHUs, split systems, heat pumps, pumps, VAVs, fan coils, exhaust fans, and related controls.
  • EPA 608 Universal Certification.
  • Ability to diagnose mechanical, electrical, airflow, refrigerant, and basic controls issues.
  • Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams, equipment manuals, work orders, PM procedures, and basic mechanical drawings.
  • Experience using CMMS, service platforms, or work order systems to document maintenance and repairs.
  • Working knowledge of LOTO, PPE, SDS, refrigerant handling, and general safe work practices.
  • Valid driver license and ability to travel to customer sites across the Metro Atlanta area.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Ability to work overtime, flexible schedules, on-call rotation, or emergency response as required.

Preferred:

  • Data center, hyperscale, colocation, hospital, airport, clean room, telecom, manufacturing, or other critical-environment experience.
  • Experience with CRAC/CRAH units, Liebert, Stulz, Data Aire, Vertiv, or similar critical cooling equipment.
  • BAS/BMS experience with Johnson Controls, Metasys, Honeywell, Siemens, Trane, or similar platforms.
  • Experience with chillers, cooling towers, condenser systems, pumps, four-pipe systems, central plants, or larger tonnage HVAC equipment.
  • Familiarity with MOPs, SOPs, EOPs, change control, permit-to-work, and mission-critical documentation.
  • OSHA 10, OSHA 30, NFPA 70E, journeyman license, or local union trade credentials.
  • Experience coordinating with customers, vendors, subcontractors, and internal service or project teams.
  • Ability to support repair recommendations, quote development, parts identification, and follow-up service planning.
