Under the direction of the Sr Facility Manager this role works as a team member in an Operations & Maintenance organization that provides a variety of O&M services within a 24/7/365 environment. Provides duties with constant awareness of the need to preserve the reliability of the critical load. Also provides operational support for building systems of other facilities as assigned. Responsible for carrying out maintenance and operations by performing the following duties personally or as a team member in a Data Center Operations & Maintenance environment.
The Senior Data Center Operations Technician is responsible for supporting the operations, maintenance, and client service functions of critical facility infrastructure. This role combines hands-on technical expertise across electrical, mechanical, and IT systems, ensuring high availability, rapid issue resolution, and safe execution of all maintenance and operational activities.
Key Responsibilities
Execute and support the Operations & Maintenance (O&M) program for data center and assigned facility spaces
Follow and enforce SOPs, MOPs, EOPs, and MMRs for all operational activities
Utilize the CMMS system to track preventive maintenance, reactive work orders, and labor hours, and guide others in its use
Respond to building system alarms, prioritizing protection of critical load, minimizing system impact, and supporting root cause analysis
Perform critical switching, lockout/tagout (LOTO), and safe work setup for maintenance and vendor activities
Act as “Smart Hands and Feet” for client requests and on-site support
Perform Level 1 support on Windows servers, including:
Initial troubleshooting
Reboots
Hardware replacement
New customer setup
Install and configure customer infrastructure, including cabinets, cages, cross-connects, and cabling
Troubleshoot and certify fiber and copper cabling, ensuring end-to-end circuit integrity
Build and maintain circuits within network management systems, perform audits, and support special projects
Coordinate with vendors and contractors to ensure safe, compliant, and efficient execution of maintenance and project work
Manage site access, escorting, and ensure adherence to safety procedures including LOTO and site protocols
Provide input on equipment evaluations and contractor scopes of work
Support management of tools, materials, and cabling inventory
Assist in maintaining availability of required equipment for operations and installations
Ensure compliance with all company, client, and regulatory requirements, including EHS standards
Maintain high standards of workmanship, safety practices, and operational discipline
Identify and report potential risks or operational issues
Participate in ongoing technical training and development
Maintain understanding of building operations and client requirements
Support documentation, reporting, and system tracking activities
Be available for 24/7/365 on-call and emergency response support, including extended hours during critical events
Qualification & Experience
Journeyman-level skills in Electrical, Mechanical, or HVAC/R disciplines (via degree, certification, or equivalent experience)
7–10 years of experience in data center operations, facility maintenance, or building engineering in Tier II–IV environments
Experience with:
CMMS systems and work order management
Vendor and subcontractor coordination
KPI tracking and reporting
Capacity planning
Strong knowledge of copper and fiber termination methods
Ability to use diagnostic tools, test equipment, and maintenance best practices
Ability to troubleshoot systems through equipment interfaces and stabilize operations until OEM support arrives
Strong commitment to customer service, teamwork, and accountability
Excellent communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
Preferred:
Knowledge of fiber testing (reflectance, dB loss, circuit validation)
Familiarity with Visio, AutoCAD, and ITIL frameworks
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel)
Ability to quickly learn and adapt to new systems and technologies
Certifications
Not required (relevant technical certifications are a plus)
