Responds to the needs of various hospital units by performing patient care duties within the health system. Patient care duties to be performed within the health system remain within the clinical scope of practice of the Paramedic. Utilized as a relief driver of ambulance when needed. Required to obtain and accurately record all available billing information, including signatures, and to thoroughly and accurately document physical findings and treatment rendered on a patient care record. Workload for the position is considered demanding and the service sets specific performance requirements which must be met.
The following is a summary of the major essential functions of this job. The incumbent may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below. In addition, specific functions may change from time to time:
Inspect, thoroughly clean, inventory, and restock the ambulance assigned to him/her and report any deficiencies in any equipment observed
Assist in maintaining the building and grounds of assigned quarters in a neat, clean, and orderly manner
Respond to calls from an assigned quarters building and change locations when requested by a supervisor or dispatcher
Receive and answer calls following the medical protocols and standard operating procedures
Promptly corrects any identified deficiencies as defined by department standards, policies, and procedures
Ensures all pertinent medical records, patient information, radiographs and transfer authorizations will accompany patient from referring facility to accepting facility
Other duties as assigned
The following qualifications, or equivalents, are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of this job:
High school diploma or equivalent required
Current certification by the State of North Carolina as a Paramedic
Current Certification as a Critical Care Provider from an accepted institution required
FP-C or CCP-C certification through BCCTPC required within 1 year required
Current FP-C/CCP-C required to function in flight paramedic capacity
Current certification in International Trauma Life Support (ITLS) as sponsored by the Academy of Emergency Physicians or equivalent required
Current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) pre-hospital provider, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) as sponsored by the American Heart Association required
Certificates of completion of National Incident Management System (NIMS) courses 100, 200, & 700 required
Valid North Carolina driver’s license required and must maintain acceptable driving record
Must obtain Neonatal Resuscitation Provider (NRP) within 6 months of employment
3 years recent and concurrent Paramedic experience providing emergency care with an ALS unit performing field and/or transport duties required
Thorough working knowledge of emergency medical procedures, rescue techniques, hazardous materials incidents, equipment and supplies employed in pre-hospital care, and of communications equipment used
Ability to work calmly under extremely stressful conditions and follow established rules, procedures, and protocols
Ability to deal with patients, their families and others in a courteous, compassionate, professional manner under the most adverse circumstances
Ability to maintain an effective working relationship with co-workers and other emergency and health care personnel
Knowledgeable of age specific physiological, psychosocial, developmental, and spiritual needs of the patients typically served
Hearing, speaking, and visual acuity are required for effective supervision
Ability to drive all types of ambulance vehicles and thorough knowledge of safe driving procedures used in the response of emergency vehicles
Ability to lift and move a minimum of 85 lbs on a regular basis with the added strength to lift upwards of 100 lbs
Position may involve exposure to skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials
Position exposes the individual to environmental conditions on frequent basis
For Critical Care Paramedics functioning in a flight role, maximum duty weight is 240 lbs (110kg) in flight uniform
Visual acuity must meet or exceed 20/40 vision, corrective lenses are allowed
