Sandra Eskenazi Mental Health Center, Indiana's first community mental health center, provides comprehensive care for emotional and behavioral problems, including severe mental illness and substance abuse. The Sandra Eskenazi Mental Health Center offers both inpatient and outpatient services, including several outreach centers as well as clinic- and community-based services.

Job Role Summary

The Crisis Specialist–IMPD Outreach works in partnership with Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (“IMPD”) to meet specific program goals outlined by Indianapolis Office of Public Safety and Sandra Eskenazi Mental Health Center (“SEMHC”).

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

• Work in partnership with IMPD to meet specific program goals outlined by Indianapolis Office of Public Safety and SEMHC

• Provide on-site clinical assessments of behavioral health and addiction during dispatched runs

• Follow-up with referred individuals to identify and overcome barriers as well as to facilitate linkage to services based on need

• Offer brief, targeted interventions, including crisis debriefings as needed, which promote resilience, wellness, and independence

• Provides consultation at 911 dispatch

• Foster and build relationships with community services, agencies, and neighborhood resources

• Periodically attend Crime Watch meetings to provide information about behavioral health and addiction treatment services

• Facilitate behavioral health and addiction training in schools and/or community settings

• Foster professional growth for IMPD and other Public Safety personnel, by providing consultation, educational services, and written resources

• Collaborate with IMPD Homeless Outreach Officers as needed

• Assist individuals with identifying and overcoming barriers to services, then link with community resources and treatment

• Maintain appropriate documentation in multiple systems to ensure communication and continuity of care with primary care, psychiatric, and medical providers

Job Requirements

• LCSW, LMFT, or LMHC licensure in the State of Indiana required

• Master’s degree in Human Services field required

• Experience of 3-5 years in a behavioral health setting working with individuals having persistent severe mental illness, behavioral health crisis experience preferred

• Experience providing compassionate care to under-served and vulnerable populations

• Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and CPI

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Understanding of and ability to implement a strengths-based, community treatment model

• Strong interpersonal skills with ability to be both clear and concise in written and verbal communications

• Demonstrates solid knowledge of psychiatric/addiction diagnoses and understanding of their impact on behavior and all life domains

• Demonstrates solid knowledge of psychotropic medications and their uses and side effects

• Willingness and ability to work cooperatively in a multidisciplinary team

• Ability to use age-appropriate communication skills

• Ability to interpret and apply complex directives, information, and regulations

• Crisis intervention skills

• Knowledge of community safety while in crisis settings

• Must meet all population-specific competencies for role and service area

• Ability to gather, interpret, and analyze data

• Knowledge of local resources and how to link individuals with services

• Knowledge of Indiana mental health statutes, especially Immediate Detentions and Emergency Detentions

• Teaching and public speaking abilities

• Sufficient computer literacy to utilize various documentation platforms
