The Crime Scene Unit is seeking up to two (2) qualified candidates for a Criminalist 1A/1B position.
Candidates selected will be assigned to the Crime Scene Unit’s Quality Assurance Section within the Detective Bureau to receive training for and the performance of crime scene investigation, the testing of evidentiary material required in scientific criminal and civil investigations and quality assurance activities necessary to maintain the Unit’s status as a nationally accredited forensic inspection agency.
Duties may include, but not be limited to, the following:
- Successful completion of the Unit’s crime scene investigation training program.
- Respond to crime scenes, when necessary, to assist with the documentation, enhancement and presumptive testing of crime scenes, as well as evidence collection and submission and the preparation of detailed forensic reports.
- Technical review of casework and courtroom testimony.
- Train in routine repairs and preventive maintenance and calibration of equipment
- Work as a member of the Unit’s Quality Assurance Section, assisting with all activities necessary to maintain the Unit’s status as an accredited forensic inspection agency. This includes, but is not limited to:
o Document control
o Preparation for and execution of internal audits
o Preparation for and assistance during external assessment activities
o Investigation and documentation of nonconforming work
o Maintenance of and data entry into multiple quality assurance databases
o Preparation and observation of the Unit’s proficiency testing program
o Organization of the Unit’s equipment including maintenance requests/repairs, the Unit’s calibration program, completion of all required performance checks, method validations and new purchase checks/approvals
o Assist with the Unit’s courtroom testimony review program: coordinate with the legal representatives of the 5 boroughs of New York City, obtain transcripts of testimony and ensure that technical reviews are done of the transcripts.
o Assist with the Unit’s case file request program: communicate with all requesting parties, ensure that case files are completed appropriately and sent to the requestors, maintain an accurate and up to date database of requests.
o Respond to crime scenes, when necessary, to perform investigator monitoring
o Remain up to date on all crime scene investigation technological advances

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, with specialization in criminalistics, forensic science, chemistry, biology, physics, molecular genetics, genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology, entomology, anthropology, ecology or a closely related scientific or engineering field.
2. For Assignment to Assignment Level I - B
In addition to meeting the "Qualification Requirements For All Assignment Levels" above, to be assigned to Assignment Level I-B individuals must have at least one year of satisfactory full-time experience in criminalistics, forensic science or analytic chemistry, or a satisfactory equivalent combination of education and experience.
3. In addition to meeting the "Qualification Requirements" above, to be assigned to Assignment Level II, individuals must have one of the following:
1. One year of experience gained as a Criminalist at Assignment Level I-B; or 2. One additional year of qualifying experience in criminalistics or forensic science, for a total of two years of such experience; or 3. A satisfactory combination of education and experience totaling two years of experience as described above.
4. In addition to meeting the "Qualification Requirements" for Assignment Level I-B above, to be assigned to Assignment Level III, individuals must have one of the following:
1. Two years of experience gained as a Criminalist at Assignment Level I-B and/or II; or 2. Two additional years of qualifying experience in criminalistics or forensic science, for a total of three years of such experience; or 3. A satisfactory combination of education and experience totaling three years of experience as described above.
5. For Assignment to Assignment Level IV
In addition to meeting the "Qualification Requirements" for Assignment Level I-B above, to be assigned to Assignment Level IV, individuals must have one of the following:
1. Three years of experience gained as a Criminalist at Assignment Level I-B, II, and /or III; or 2. Three additional years of experience in criminalistics or forensic science, for a total of four years of such experience; or
3. A satisfactory combination of education and experience totaling four years of experience, as described above.
