Job Description

Global shipping depends on reliable and efficient energy supply. Energy Markets plays a critical role in ensuring fuel availability for Maersk's global fleet while managing a complex network of suppliers, customers, financial counterparties and commercial relationships across international energy markets.

As a Credit Risk Analyst, you will assess counterparties across a global portfolio of physical commodity transactions and support credit decisions that enable commercial activity while protecting the business from counterparty losses.

Working at the intersection of finance, risk and trading, you will gain exposure to global energy markets, marine fuels, shipping, trade finance and complex international transactions. This role is suited to an analytical and outgoing professional who understands how businesses operate, how transactions are structured and where financial and commercial risks ultimately reside.

About us:

Global trade is evolving rapidly, creating new challenges and opportunities across supply chains, energy markets and transportation. At Maersk, we connect the world through integrated logistics and transportation solutions, helping our customers navigate complexity and keep global commerce moving. Built on more than a century of pioneering success, we continue to innovate and invest in the solutions that will shape the future of trade.

In Energy Markets we’re an integral part of the Maersk group and a leading participant in the global marine fuels trading industry. As Maersk's fuel sourcing arm, we procure and manage more than 12 million tonnes of fuel annually, overseeing sourcing, storage, blending and delivery across a global supply network. In addition, we provide bunkering, trading and risk management solutions to customers across the shipping and energy sectors.

Key responsibilities:

  • Perform fundamental counterparty credit analysis across shipping, oil and energy sectors, using financial statements and, where information is limited, other verifiable indicators of financial capacity; translate conclusions into internal risk grades, credit limits and approval recommendations.
  • Measure and monitor current and potential future exposure across physical and financial transactions, including secured and unsecured receivables, mark-to-market exposure, settlement risk, concentration risk etc; investigate limit breaches and define escalation or remediation actions.
  • Assess transaction structures and contractual terms and recommend risk mitigating actions.
  • Develop and calibrate credit risk methodologies, scorecards, early-warning indicators, exposure logic and portfolio reporting.
  • Analyse group structures, ownership, structural subordination, cross-default risk and jurisdictional enforceability in coordination with Legal, Treasury, Finance, Tax and commercial stakeholders.
  • Monitor sector and macro fundamentals, freight and bunker markets dynamics, commodity price volatility, geopolitical developments, sanctions and regulatory changes, and quantify their implications for counterparties and portfolio concentrations.
  • Support credit assessment of sustainable fuels and energy-transition transactions, including risks arising from technology, offtake, feedstock, regulations, project structure and long-dated contractual commitments.

We're looking for:

  • Relevant counterparty credit experience in commodity trading, oil and gas, marine fuels, shipping or a financial institution covering energy or commodity clients, with the ability to independently complete and defend full credit assessments.
  • Advanced financial statement analysis: good understanding of cash generation, working-capital volatility, debt capacity, liquidity, margins and earnings quality, accruals, off-balance-sheet obligations, contingent liabilities, leases and covenants. Ability to assess fleet-finance structures, including owned versus chartered fleets, operating and finance leases, vessel capex commitments, refinancing needs, and residual-value risk.
  • Ability to work with incomplete and fragmented information, validate multiple sources, identify inconsistencies and form a balanced, evidence-based view.
  • Sound understanding of how credit risk arises in physical commodity trading and marine-fuels supply chains, including fuel types, pricing, payment terms, Incoterms, title and risk transfer, storage, blending, fees, claims, contractual default mechanics and key exposure concepts.
  • Ability to interpret complex corporate structures, SPVs, commercial versus asset-owning entities and financial flows between them.
  • Quantitative skills in financial modelling, sensitivity analysis and downside scenarios; proficiency in Excel and/or Python, R or similar.
  • Practical knowledge of trade finance and credit risk mitigation instruments, including guarantees, letters of credit, SCF, collateral, netting and set-off arrangements.
  • Hands-on experience with CTRM, ERP, TMS or credit systems, including reconciling exposure data, challenging calculation logic and investigating underlying transactions.
  • Clear written and verbal communication, with the ability to present and defend a concise risk view, challenge assumptions constructively and engage senior decision-makers.
  • A relevant degree and/or professional certification (e.g. FRM) is an advantage.
  • High attention to detail, sound judgement under pressure and the ability to learn quickly and manage competing priorities; strong analytical potential and transferable skills may compensate for not meeting every requirement mentioned above.

We encourage you to submit your application early, as we will be interviewing candidates on an ongoing basis.
