Credit Officer

Industry: Microfinance Banking
Location: Obanikoro, Lagos

The Credit Officer will be responsible for managing the Bank's credit administration processes, evaluating loan applications, conducting detailed risk assessments, monitoring loan performance, and ensuring compliance with internal credit policies and regulatory standards.

The ideal candidate must possess strong analytical skills, sound credit judgment, and practical experience in loan management within the microfinance banking sector. The role requires a proactive professional capable of maintaining high portfolio quality while supporting business growth and customer acquisition.

Key Responsibilities


  • Assess and evaluate loan applications in accordance with the Bank's credit policies, procedures, and risk framework.

  • Conduct detailed credit analysis, financial assessments, and customer due diligence before loan approvals.

  • Review customers' financial capacity, repayment ability, cash flow, and business viability.

  • Verify customer information and conduct field visits for loan appraisal, monitoring, and recovery purposes.

  • Prepare comprehensive credit appraisal reports and recommendations for management approval.

  • Monitor and manage loan portfolios to ensure high portfolio quality and timely repayments.

  • Track loan performance and identify early warning signs of default or credit deterioration.

  • Follow up on delinquent accounts and support loan recovery efforts to minimize non-performing loans (NPLs).

  • Maintain accurate loan documentation, customer files, collateral records, and credit reports.

  • Ensure compliance with internal credit guidelines, CBN regulations, and other regulatory requirements applicable to Microfinance Banks.

  • Monitor credit risk exposure and escalate identified risks or policy breaches appropriately.

  • Support branch and business growth through quality loan generation and portfolio expansion initiatives.

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with customers while ensuring responsible lending practices.

  • Collaborate with other departments to improve operational efficiency and customer service delivery.

  • Prepare periodic reports on portfolio performance, risk exposure, loan recoveries, and credit activities.

  • Participate in credit committee meetings and provide professional recommendations where required.

Requirements & Competencies


  • Minimum of 3 – 5 years' experience in Credit Administration, Loan Management, Risk Assessment, or related roles within a Microfinance Bank or financial institution.

  • Strong understanding of credit analysis, loan structuring, portfolio monitoring, and debt recovery processes.

  • Good knowledge of microfinance banking operations and lending practices in Nigeria.

  • Strong analytical, investigative, and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent attention to detail and sound decision-making ability.

  • Strong interpersonal, negotiation, and communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple loan accounts effectively.

  • Good understanding of regulatory compliance requirements within the Nigerian financial sector.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and banking/loan management applications.

  • High level of integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.

  • Ability to meet targets and work effectively in a fast-paced environment.

Educational Qualification


  • HND/B.Sc in Business Administration, Banking & Finance, Economics, Accounting, or any related discipline.

  • Relevant professional certifications will be an added advantage.
