Job Duties

For more than three decades, the Virginia Lottery has worked to build a strong reputation, one synonymous with providing fun, entertaining experiences and doing so responsibly and with integrity. Proceeds from traditional Lottery games support K-12 public education in Virginia. Taxes generated by sports wagering and casino gaming, which are regulated by the Lottery, benefit other priorities of the Commonwealth.

The Virginia Lottery is currently seeking a Creative Copywriter to join our Marketing Department.

The Creative Copywriter is a key member of the Advertising team at the Virginia Lottery, responsible for creating, editing, and maintaining player-facing content and developing compelling, consumer-oriented messaging that drives advertising campaigns, supports product launches, strengthens player engagement and champions lottery innovation, and builds brand awareness—all while aligning with the Lottery’s mission, values, and brand voice. The Creative Copywriter will play a critical role in developing scripts and storyboards for advertising campaigns. The position reports to the Advertising Manager and collaborates with colleagues across creative services and internal clients. This role involves writing and optimizing creative content across multiple platforms, including digital ads, webpages, advertising campaigns and promotions, radio, brochures, point-of-sale signage, event materials, video captions, player-facing emails, social media posts, and other channels. The ideal candidate will have a strong command of web and SEO best practices, excel in digital storytelling, and can craft compelling, engaging content that resonates with diverse audiences.

Note - This position requires in-office work three days per week including Tuesday and Wednesday.

Minimum Qualifications

• BA in English, Marketing, Advertising, Communications, or a related field.
• Requires 3–5 years of professional copywriting experience in advertising, marketing, or agency environments, with demonstrated success developing content for multi-channel campaigns across digital, broadcast, retail, and social platforms.
• Experience writing consumer-facing content that supports product marketing, promotions, and brand campaigns; a strong understanding of digital marketing practices, including SEO and performance-driven content; and the ability to collaborate effectively in a cross-functional fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
• Familiarity with lottery products, promotions, or compliance-driven advertising standards is a plus.
• Expert knowledge of copywriting principles, including persuasive writing, storytelling, and audience engagement.
• Strong editing and proofreading skills with attention to detail, grammar, and clarity.
• Ability to translate complex product or promotional information into clear, compelling, consumer-friendly messaging.
• Ability to write in a consistent, engaging tone aligned with the Virginia Lottery brand voice, maintaining clarity, positivity, and audience appeal.
• Ability to develop creative concepts, messaging strategies, and copy that support integrated marketing campaigns.
• Skill in participating in ideation, brainstorming, and storyboarding processes for multi-channel campaigns.
• Understanding of multi-channel marketing environments, including digital, broadcast, retail, and social platforms.
• Knowledge of digital marketing principles, including SEO, content optimization, and performance-driven messaging.
• Ability to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams, including designers, producers, marketers, and external partners
• Ability to ensure all content meets legal, brand, and responsible gaming requirements.

A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
