Under supervision, operates, maintains, and makes such minor repairs as are necessary to ensure continued operation of cranes, gantries, shovels, draglines, and like equipment, using motive power except steam for the Staten Island Ferry; performs related work. May perform work upon floating barges or derricks.
EXAMPLES OF TYPICAL TASKS:
Operates and is responsible for the operation of all types of assigned equipment, except those powered by steam, in a safe and efficient manner. Operates a wide variety of such machinery on an ongoing basis. Inspects, checks, and tests components of assigned equipment using any motive power except steam, prior to operation. Prepares assigned equipment, except those powered by steam, for New York City Department of Buildings inspection and demonstrates and operates equipment during such inspection. Checks on the proper warm-up equipment prior to operation. Makes such adjustments as are necessary for the proper operation of assigned equipment. Replaces wire cables, ropes, and parts so as to ensure continued operation of assigned equipment.
MEDICAL/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT: Candidates must pass a medical examination prior to appointment and thereafter, pursuant to requirements.
DRUG TESTING REQUIREMENT: Candidates must pass a drug screening to be appointed. Crane Operators (AMPES) are subject to random drug and alcohol testing during their employment.
TWIC REQUIREMENT: Once selected for employment at the Staten Island Ferry, federal regulations require that the applicant must either undergo a federal background check as part of the Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) program or already possess a TWIC. The TWIC must be obtained within 30 days of appointment, and be maintained for the duration of employment. Qualification Requirements
1. Four years of full-time experience acquired within the last fifteen years as a crane operator operating diesel, gasoline and electric powered cranes; or
2. Not less than three years of such experience acquired within the last ten years plus one year of additional full-time experience maintaining or repairing cranes.
License Requirement
All candidates must possess a valid Hoisting Machine Operator's License (basic license) issued by the New York City Department of Buildings.
