 Crane Operator – Tower & Crawler Cranes (Steel Structure Construction)

Location

Dunedin and Christchurch

The Crane Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently operating tower cranes (up to 100 tons) and crawler cranes (up to 80 tons) to support steel erection and vertical building construction. This role involves lifting, positioning, and installing structural steel components while ensuring compliance with safety standards, operational procedures, and project schedules. This position is part of a long-term project that will run 4-5 years and will start in June/July.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate tower cranes (up to 100-ton capacity) and crawler cranes (up to 80-ton capacity) in construction environments.
  • Perform precise lifting, hoisting, and placement of steel structural components for multi-story buildings.
  • Interpret lift plans, load charts, and rigging diagrams to ensure safe lifting operations.
  • Coordinate crane movements with riggers, signalers, and site supervisors.
  • Lift and position beams, columns, trusses, and prefabricated steel components.
  • Assist with vertical alignment and placement of steel during erection.
  • Support high-rise and multi-level construction sequences.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Crane Operator Licence (Tower Crane and Crawler Crane) – Level 4.
  • Proven experience operating:
    • Tower cranes up to 100 tons
    • Crawler cranes up to 80 tons
  • Experience in structural steel erection for vertical/high-rise buildings.
  • Strong knowledge of load charts, rigging practices, and lifting techniques.
  • Understanding and compliance with construction site safety regulations and standards.
  • Able to work 12 hour shifts and half a day on Saturday.
  • Housing in Christchurch and Dunedin is available
