Pharmacy Technician – Cardinal Pharmacy

The Pharmacy Technician position reports under the direct supervision of the Pharmacist(s) to provide medication and other health care products to patients. Although the Cardinal Pharmacy is an enterprise of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe of Michigan, it operates under the Migizi Economic Development Company Policies and Procedures.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Receive written prescription or requests for prescription refill from patient/patient’s representative, physician, or other health care professionals and verify that information is complete and accurate.
  • Retrieve, count, pour, weigh, measure and sometimes mix medication under the supervision of the Pharmacist(s).
  • Prepare prescription labels, select type of container, affix label to container, price and file prescription after verified by Pharmacist(s).
  • Answer telephones, responding to questions or requests.
  • At the direction of the pharmacist, assist in the obtaining from the patient/patient’s representative, physician, or other health care professionals such information as diagnosis or desired therapeutic outcome, reimbursement mechanisms.
  • Establish and maintain patient profiles with such information as medication history, allergies, medication duplication, and/or drug-disease, drug-drug, drug laboratory, and drug nutrient interactions.
  • Assess prescriptions/medications order for completeness, correctness, authenticity, legality, and reimbursements eligibility.
  • Deliver medication to patient/patient’s representative.
  • Assist customers by answering simple questions, locating items or referring them to the pharmacist for medication information.
  • Order, label, and count stock of medications, chemicals, durable medical equipment, devices, and supplies, including expediting of emergency orders and enter inventory data into computer.
  • Receive and store incoming supplies, verify quantities against invoices, and inform supervisors of stock needs and shortages.
  • Place pharmaceuticals, durable medical equipment, devices, and supplies in inventory under proper storage and security conditions.
  • Remove from inventory expired, recalled, or discontinued pharmaceutical and supplies and document actions taken.
  • Maintain record keeping systems of controlled substances received, stored, and any items removed from inventory.
  • Communicate changes in product availability to pharmacist, patient/patient’s representative, physicians and other health care providers.
  • Maintain policies and procedures to determine theft and/or drug diversion.
  • Clean, and help maintain equipment and work areas, and sterilize glassware according to prescribed methods.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
  • Maintain Pharmacy Technician Certification pursuant to the certifying Board.
  • HIPAA regulations must be adhered to at all times.
  • Must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Work Environment/Safety Hazards:

Frequent use of hands, wrists and fingers associated with computer operation and prescription handling. This position incurs frequent standing and walking throughout the pharmacy, may also involve prolonged sitting, heavy lifting and the use of a stepladder.

Minimum Qualifications:

Required

  • 18 years of age.
  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Licensed and certified by the State of Michigan Board of Pharmacy as a registered Pharmacy Technician.
  • Pre-employment background check, drug screen, and TB test.

Preferred:

  • Native American.
