Courtroom Assistant

The Colorado Springs Municipal Court is seeking a Courtroom Assistant to support the judicial processing of courtroom activities and cases. In this critical role, you will perform duties requiring specialized knowledge in courtroom procedures, ensuring the accuracy and compliance of case processing while maintaining courtroom decorum. You’ll also serve as a vital resource to judges, attorneys, and court staff in the execution of daily court functions.

As a Courtroom Assistant, you will:

  • Manage courtroom activities by providing administrative support to judges and staff, ensuring order and adherence to courtroom rules.
  • Administer oaths, manage jurors, and perform Jury Commissioner functions.
  • Maintain efficient in-court case flow by ensuring the accuracy and timely entry of case dispositions.
  • Process appeals and prepare transcripts, as required.
  • Coordinate appearances for interpreters, attorneys, witnesses, and legal guardians.
  • Mark exhibits, compile legal documents, and verify charges for accuracy and sufficiency.
  • Notify law enforcement of warrants and interpret judicial directives to ensure compliance with orders.
  • Respond to inquiries regarding case status and court procedures.
  • Identify operational inefficiencies and recommend improvements.
  • Provide technical direction to staff, utilizing knowledge of policies, procedures, and accounting practices.
  • Act as a liaison with the El Paso County Jail, including monitoring the jail population, coordinating video court, and retrieving court paperwork.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, court case management systems, and justice information systems.
  • Strong knowledge of courtroom procedures, legal terminology, and applicable federal, state, and local laws.
  • Ability to interpret judicial orders and apply rules of criminal and civil procedure.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to multi-task and prioritize under pressure.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Professionalism, emotional maturity, integrity, and honesty in handling sensitive and confidential matters.

Examples of duties

  • Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade (high school diploma or GED).
  • Three (3) years of full-time records management, legal administrative, or related experience
